Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots will be released for the Playstation 3 June 12th 2008.
A few years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, the MGS4 story begins. In this short period of time, the world has changed drastically. PMCs [Private Military Companies] have taken the place of state armies as the world’s primary war engines - PMCs are private companies that specialize in warfare. The Big Shell Incident of MGS2 has prompted the U.S. Government to require all PMC soldiers be injected with nanomachines. These nanomachines regulate data, performance, and even emotions. Every soldier and weapon is controlled, regulated, and kept in check. This system, known as Sons of the Patriots (SOP), even makes it physically impossible for soldiers to turn their guns on their clients. In essence, it places the battlefield under corporate management. As a result, the fires of war continue to spread, and the PMCs inexorably increase their power and influence in world affairs.

Campbell stepped out of retirement and hired Philanthropy to do a hired hit on Liquid Ocelot. Not content with the world simply ignoring Liquid's attempt to plunge the world into total war (in effect aiding the economy of the 21st Century) Campbell has taken the matter into his own hands and hired Snake to perform the hit.

According to reports, Meryl was romantically involved with Snake following the Shadow Moses incident and lived with him in Alaska for awhile. However, the relationship was short-lived and Meryl returned to active service a few months later, working on numerous classified missions, including a reconnaissance mission in the Basra Republic at the Middle East and a rescue mission to save Colonel Campbell in the South American Republic of Esteria, where she and Snake took down convicted war criminal Sergei Ivanovich. Sometime after the Big Shell incident of 2009, the FOXHOUND unit was officially reinstated, with Meryl appointed as their new field commander. In 2014, she became involved in a secret operation to assasinate Liquid Ocelot; the details are still classified at the moment.
When she meets Snake again for the first time since their relationship she shows some care mixed with skepticysm to him for his much older looks suggesting that their relationship wasn't embittering for Meryl as it was for Snake.

The unit is made entirely of females suffering Post Traumatic Stress Disorder caused by the horrors of war. This made them potentially incredible soldiers, and this potential was exploited by person or persons unknown to turn them into superhuman War-Machines. They are named for the same animals as the soldiers comprising FOXHOUND during the Shadow Moses incident - it is not known what connection they share with the group, if any.
Each member of the unit manifests their names during battle, resembling their namesake and expressing a certain emotion as they kill - and simultaneously demand that their enemies show that same emotion as they die. Crying Wolf is a howling quadruped that sobs as she kills. Laughing Octopus crushes her enemies to death with bionic tentacles while laughing. Raging Raven soars across the battlefield dealing death and destruction in raw anger, Screaming Mantis uses her many limbs to beckon to her enemies like a praying mantis while screaming.

Crying Wolf is a cybernetic wolf. Thanks to her posture and strength she can stop vehicles, and use brute force to make her way through a crowded area or street. She also has a rail gun attached to her back - this gun resembles the one carried by Fortune. Crying Wolf can also howl like an actual wolf - perhaps for a psychological effect not dissimilar from the cicada noises produced by the GEKKOU.

After the Shadow Moses incident, Naomi was arrested for injecting Snake with FOXDIE, and placed in an undetermined maximum security facility. However, Nastasha Romanenko reveals in her book In the Darkness of Shadow Moses: The Unofficial Truth, that Naomi escaped from the facility with the aid of an unknown stranger. Romanenko adds that, "I know of only one person who could have breached the base's tight security and successfully led someone to freedom", suggesting that it was Solid Snake who freed her, despite her attempted murder of him.
In 2014, Naomi was kidnapped by Liquid Ocelot, because she was the only one who knew enough about FOXDIE to be able to crack the third generation form of it in order to disable enemy SOP Systems.

Drebin is an Arms Dealer/Gun Launder who can modify, sale, and exchange weapons on the fly that originally belong to the PMC. Along side Drebin is Little Gray, a monkey who wears nothing but a pair of diapers. Together, Drebin and Little Gray sell modified weapons to the underdog country who is currently at war against the Praying Mantis military. Derbin stops Snake from shooting Little Grey and tells him that he can get rid of ID tags on the weapons belonging to PMCs and sell them to Snake along with bits of information.
.
A mass-produced, pilot-less Metal Gear. This unit's powerful legs are composed of artificially grown muscle capable of making agile maneuvers such as long-distance leaps. It is armed with small nuclear weapons.
Set in 2014, five years after the "Manhattan Incident", MGS4 portrays a world where the restriction of military intervention on foreign soil has been eased, fueling the need for private military companies (PMCs) to fight proxy wars for business purposes. Nanotechnology has become prominent, both to enhance the capabilities and enforce the loyalty of mercenaries. The five largest of these PMCs are owned by a single mother company named Outer Heaven, which is operated by Liquid Ocelot. Amassing an army whose manpower rivals that of the United States, Liquid prepares to launch an armed insurrection. With the world once again in crisis, a rapidly aging and disillusioned Solid Snake is deployed into the Middle East by Roy Campbell to terminate Liquid. MGS4 will take place in five locations throughout the world, including the Middle East, South America and Eastern Europe.
