F.O.X. UNIT

Naked Snake

In his past, Big Boss was reknowned throughout the world as the greatest soldier of the 20th century. In 1964, Big Boss (known back then as Naked Snake) was ordered to take part in a dangerous mission known as Operation Snake Eater - a mission on which the fate of the world lay. If Snake wasn't successful, it would mean the end of the Cold War and the beginning of an all-out nuclear holocaust. His mission involved the assassination of The Boss - his mentor who raised him as her own and taught him everything that she knew. Unknown to Snake at the time, The Boss was in fact working for the U.S. government, and had in fact been ordered to defect. In addition, Naked Snake had to ensure the safety of the world by preventing a madman from using a prototype nuclear weapon. His first assignment, known as the Virtuous Mission, was to infilitrate a place called Tselinoyarsk in order to locate and rescue Nikolai Sokolov, a man who was working on a new type of nuclear weapon. Though Snake was successful in meeting up with Sokolov, the COBRA Unit led by The Boss later intervened and captured Sokolov on behalf of Col. Volgin. Shocked at this defection, Snake fought The Boss on a bridge at Dolinovodno. The Boss easily defeated Snake, breaking his arm and throwing him over the bridge to his apparent death.

Snake survived the fall however, and was later picked up and debriefed on the failure of the mission. Only a week later, Snake was sent back to Tselinoyarsk in order to rescue Sokolov and to clear the name of the United States. Not long into his mission, Snake encounters a young woman named EVA who claims to be one of the two NSA codebreakers which had defected to the Soviet Union. Later on, Snake infilitrates a research facility (the Granin Design Bureau) and discovers Aleksandr Granin, a weapons scientist who provides him with information to help him reach Volgin's headquarters at Groznyj Grad. Snake is successful in infilitrating the fortress, though he is captured by Volgin and later interrogated. Snake loses his right eye thanks to Ocelot, though he later escapes. Snake meets up with EVA after his escape, who provides him with C3 - a revolutionary new form of explosive which can be used to destroy the Shagohod. Returning to Groznyj Grad once again, Snake infilitrates the hangar where the Shagohod is being constructed and plants enough of the C3 to destroy the entire facility. Unfortunately, the explosion is not enough and the Shagohod emerges unharmed - now fully active and piloted by a deranged Volgin. After a long chase, Snake and EVA defeat Volgin and the Shagohod. As EVA prepares their escape, Snake faces The Boss in a final duel to the death amidst a field of white flowers. Snake is ultimately victorious over The Boss, who provides Snake with the disc containing the Philosophers' Legacy before asking him to shoot her. Snake does so, killing his mentor and his 'mother'.

After the events of Operation Snake Eater, Naked Snake was promoted to the rank of Big Boss by President Lyndon B. Johnson. However, after all that he had witnessed and what he had been told, Big Boss had become disillusioned as a soldier.

Major Zero/ Major Tom

Born in Exeter, England in 1909. Commanding officer of the "FOX" unit, a specialised unit which focuses on infilitration and espionage - the precursor to FOXHOUND. A reknowned fan of British spy, James Bond. Previously, Zero was an operative for the British MI6, operating under the codename of "O". In addition, he served in the British Special Air Service - which was where he first met The Boss. In 1964, Major Zero briefs Naked Snake on the Virtuous Mission - a mission involving the search and rescue of Dr. Nikolai Sokolov, a Russian scientist. It was Zero who organised the first rescue attempt of Sokolov. Throughout the Virtuous Mission, Major Zero goes under the alias of "Major Tom" - though he later changes to Major Zero at the beginning of Operation Snake Eater. Throughout Snake's mission, Zero provides support and instructions via the radio. All along however, Snake was just a political tool for the use of the Philosophers and as such he becomes disillusioned with Zero at the end of Operation Snake Eater.

In 1970, Zero officially disbands the FOX unit after a rebellion the unit staged in South America, to which Zero was accused of organising, later being tried for treason. As Big Boss arrives in America with his troops, Major Zero is present along with another government official. He then hands Big Boss a document, leaving Big Boss (formerly known as Naked Snake) to create FOXHOUND in 1971.

Para-Medic

Born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1936. Para-Medic serves as FOX's medic as well as a provider of information on local flora and fauna of Tselinoyarsk. Para-Medic acts overprotective when speaking to Naked Snake, often warning him about anything he chooses to eat. Para-Medic is also a fan of movies, such as Godzilla. Along with Zero and SIGINT, Para-Medic is also cast aside by a disillusioned Naked Snake after the events of Operation Snake Eater. Afterwards, Para-Medic goes on to establish the nation's first paramedic system in Seattle, Washington in 1970.

Sigint

Born in Nashville, Tennessee, on November 11, 1939, Sigint is a member of the FOX unit, and the self-proclaimed "expert on weapons, equipment and cutting-edge technology", although his self-credibility would precede him as an arms specialist and engineer. He provides detailed information on weaponry, machinery and camouflage techniques, as well as gadgetry to Snake during Operation: Snake Eater. His codename refers to the military term "SIGINT", or SIGnal INTelligence.

Sigint is the youngest member of the team, being only 24, and believes himself to be the only sane member of the unit. Sigint tends to become easily irate, reprimanding Snake on various occasions for his strange and conspicuous choices in clothing and face paint (one memorable example being when he questions Snake on his use of a cardboard box for a disguise). He is also the character most responsible for breaking the "fourth wall", as well as attempting to explain away things that seem odd or not right. For example, playing the game a second time with The Boss' Patriot pistol will result in Sigint asking Snake how he managed to get his hands on the gun if The Boss is still alive and using the weapon herself. Snake will reply that Sigint worries too much about "the details." He developed the Active Sonar, the Motion Detector, the AP. Sensor, and the EZ Gun (available only on the lowest difficulty setting or getting it by catching all 47 species of animals and plants in the game in any other difficulty) which Snake uses, as well as the Raikov mask (a reference to the main character of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty). In 1965, Sigint joined ARPA and takes part in the development of ARPANET. In a radio conversation, he reveals to Snake that he suffered racial discrimination in his former jobs, due to the fact that he is Afro-American, and that Major Zero recruited him without any prejudices.

THE COBRA UNIT

The Boss/ The Joy

The Boss was born as the daughter of one of the higher ranked members of the Philosophers' Wisemen's Committee. A legendary soldier, and considered by many to be the mother of America's Special Forces. Prior to her founding of the COBRA Unit, she was an instructor and lecturer at one of the Philosophers' training and schooling facilities. In 1942, The Boss founded the COBRA Unit - an elite group of individuals each with their own special and unique ability. In addition, it was around this time that The Boss first met Major Zero and Naked Snake - the latter of which would become her discipline and develop CQC with her. Two years later, The Boss and her COBRA Unit participated in the infamous beach landings at Normandy. Their objective was to infilitrate behind enemy lines and disable V-2 rocket installations. At the time, The Boss was pregnant with her child, and during the landings on the beaches she gave birth to a young baby boy. After the end of the Second World War, The Boss disbanded the COBRA Unit. Afterwards, The Boss began participating in secret projects run by the U.S. government. Firstly, in 1951, The Boss was involved in the atomic testing at the Nevada desert. Then in 1960, The Boss was sent into space on a mission to acquire data on how well the human body could cope in such conditions. One year later, The Boss was ordered to take part in the Bay of Pigs Invasion at Bahia de Cochinos, Cuba.

Then, two years prior to Operation Snake Eater - The Boss was sent on a mission to assassinate her lover, The Sorrow, who had returned to the Soviet Union after the disbandment of the COBRA Unit. In 1964, The Boss was then ordered to take part in a major operation to recover the Philosophers' Legacy from Col. Volgin - known as the Virtuous Mission. In order to acquire the Legacy, The Boss had to trade her way into Volgin's ranks - and to do so she was given two portable nuclear warheads, one of which was ultimately used by Volgin to destroy Sokolov's design bureau. However, with the destruction of the bureau, The Boss' mission was greatly expanded and revised - this time she would have to also help prove the innocence of the United States in a mission known as Operation Snake Eater. One week after the Virtuous Mission, the U.S. government sends in an operative with orders to assassinate The Boss. The man who must carry out those orders is Naked Snake - The Boss' beloved protege. Understanding the fact that in order to save the world and her country she had to give her life, The Boss gradually helps Snake with his mission while at the same time keeping up Volgin's trust. Ultimately, The Boss informs Snake about the Philosophers and tells him that as a soldier it's his duty to face an existence of endless battle. After a final battle between the two amidst a field of white flowers, Snake defeats his mentor and kills her with a single shot from her own weapon. In the end, it was the ultimate goal of The Boss to use the Philosophers' Legacy to unite the Philosophers back together and in turn the people of the world. Seen as a traitor by both the United States and the Soviet Union, she would always be seen as a hero and a patriot by her disciple - Big Boss.

The Pain

Formerly a beekeeper, The Pain possesses the ability to control an entire swarm of deadly hornets. His face and body are covered with hundreds of stings, though as a result the hornets he commands now see him as a hornet just like them. In order to control the swarm, The Pain carries a queen hornet within his backpack, using the sound she makes to guide the rest of the swarm into doing his bidding. The Pain's weapon of choice is an unusual one - a tommy gun - which he uses along with grenades. In battle, The Pain uses his hornets to protect himself - ordering them to create copies of himself for example. Inside his body, The Pain grows and raises hornets with the ability to launch themselves at great speeds towards an enemy - these are known as "bullet bees" and are launched from his mouth.

Prior to Operation Snake Eater, The Pain - along with the other Cobras - reunited with The Boss at Dolinovodno. Some time later, during Operation Snake Eater, The Pain fought Snake in the underground caverns at Chyornaya Peschera. After his defeat at the hands of Snake, The Pain used his internal microbomb to blow himself up along with his swarm.

The Fear

Known as the "Spider Soldier", The Fear has an unusual appearance. His tongue is forked like a lizard, enabling him to use it as another appendage, and his elbows are double jointed, allowing him to dislocate his joints and use them to move in ways never thought possible by a human. The Fear also employs the use of experimental stealth camouflage, making him practically invisible. There is a downside, for the stealth camouflage continuously drains The Fear's stamina - and once his stamina runs out, the stealth no longer works. The jungle is the natural battlefield for The Fear, a battlefield environment in which he excels in. The Fear uses two primary weapons of choice - the Little Joe and the William Tell - both of which were long and short ranged crossbows, capable of inflicting great amounts of damage on Snake.

The Fear ambushes Snake upon his return from Graniny Gorki, injuring Snake with a serious arrow wound to his leg. After his defeat by Naked Snake, The Fear ensnares himself on a web-like trap before activating his microbomb and blowing himself up in a shower of arrows.

The End

Born in the 1860s, The End is the oldest member of the COBRA unit. It is believed that The End can survive without food and water for weeks, and this is down to the fact that his body is capable of photosynthesis - much like a plant. In addition, it is apparent that The End is able to communicate with the 'spirits' of the forest. In this way, The End can gain tactical information on his adversaries in combat. The End is also said to be the greatest sniper in the world, one which is unmatched by anyone else. It is this reputation that granted him the title of "Ancient Sniper". During Operation Snake Eater, The End was sent to ambush Snake at Sokrovenno. After a long, gruelling duel, Snake was ultimately victorious in defeating the aging sniper.

The End's weapon of choice is an M1891/30 Mosin Nagant, originally used by the Soviet army during the Second World War. However, the Mosin Nagant that The End uses has been modified to fire tranquilliser darts.

The Fury

Known as the "Flame Soldier" by his comrades, The Fury was once a cosmonaut for the Soviet Union. In 1942, he became part of the legendary COBRA Unit. With the ending of the Second World War and the disbandment of the COBRA Unit, The Fury returned to Russia and was sent on a mission into space. However, something went wrong, resulting in an accident which caused severe burns throughout his body. Upon his re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere, The Fury witnessed flames surrounding the world, though this is most likely due to the burning up of his re-entry vehicle. As a result of bearing witness to this, The Fury became deranged and seemingly obsessed with setting the world ablaze with fire and flame. The Fury reunited with The Boss and the COBRA Unit during the Virtuous Mission.

Sometime later, The Fury participates in Operation Snake Eater - encountering Naked Snake in an underground tunnel beneath Groznyj Grad. After a tough and fiery battle, The Fury is defeated by Snake. The Fury wears a special flame retardant suit to protect him from his own flames, this suit is also equipped with a jetpack. In addition, The Fury's weapon of choice is a modified flamethrower which uses liquid hydrogen instead of the usual flamethrower fuel.

The Sorrow

The Sorrow served in the legendary COBRA Unit during the Second World War, participating in the infamous Normandy beach landings of D-Day. Though lacking combat abilities and skills, The Sorrow is capable of reading the thoughts of those who have died. For example, he would speak with dead soldiers and ask them about current enemy positions. The Sorrow and The Boss were a couple, and together they had a child - which was born on the battlefield at Normandy. Two years prior to Operation Snake Eater, The Sorrow defected to the Soviet Union. Something which the Philosophers weren't too happy about.

As a result, they ordered The Boss - The Sorrow's own lover - to carry out the assassination. In 1964, The Sorrow follows The Boss throughout Operation Snake Eater, signifying his presence with heavy rain. The Sorrow also assists Snake in his mission, providing him with hints and radio frequencies in order to escape from certain areas. After Snake's first escape from Groznjy Grad, The Sorrow appears before him and ushers Snake to follow him down a river. Snake complies and along the way he meets the ghosts of all those he has killed, including members of the COBRA Unit. In the end, it's apparent that The Sorrow is responsible for Volgin's death when a burst of lightning lashes down from the skies and strikes Volgin.

THE OCELOT UNIT

Ocelot/ Adamska

Born in 1944, during D-Day, Ocelot was the child of a legendary soldier known as "The Boss". As a child, Ocelot was taken by the Philosophers who raised him to become one of their most successful operatives. In 1964, Ocelot served in the GRU, under the commanding authority of Col. Yevgeny Volgin - who saw Ocelot as a protege. It was in this same year that Ocelot met Big Boss ("Naked Snake"), who at the time was undergoing an infilitration and rescue mission - known as "Operation Snake Eater". Ocelot engaged Naked Snake in combat on a few occasions, developing something of a rivalry with him. After the operation it was revealed that Ocelot wasn't even working for Volgin and the Soviets at all, but was instead reporting directly to the Director of the CIA - and ultimately, the Patriots, who at the time were known as the Philosophers. Ocelot was also known as ADAM, one of the so-called NSA codebreakers. Many years passed, with Ocelot meeting up with Vulcan Raven and Sergei Gurlukovich. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ocelot joined OMON, an elite swat team of the Russian Tax Police. Later on, he joined SVR - the Russian Foreign Intelligence Agency, which was also part of the KGB. However, Ocelot was dissatisfied with the new system and wanted to get out. He then left Russia, offering his services as a hired mercenary around the world.

SUPPORTING  CHARACTERS

Colonel Yevgeny Borisovitch Volgin

Volgin's father was in charge of the Philosophers' money laundering activities, and it was up to him to make sure that the vast sum of money was kept safe during the chaos of the Second World War. However, Volgin's father instead embezzled the money throughout the world where it eventually fell into the hands of his son, Yevgeny Volgin - a colonel within the Russian GRU. Volgin's intentions were to seize control over the Soviet Union by replacing its current leader, Nikita Khrushchev, with Leonid Brezhnev - and then manipulating the latter into doing his bidding. The enormous amount of money which ended up in Volgin's possession was known as the Philosophers' Legacy, and it was this money which was used to help fund numerous projects, including Sokolov's Shagohod - which Volgin later wanted to use in order to sell to seize power over the Soviet Union. Volgin is also said to have an interest in members of both sexes - witnessed by his relationships with Major Raikov and Tatyana (EVA). Volgin also possesses a rather unique trait, the ability to carry and control a high electrical charge throughout his body - said to be in excess of ten million volts.

Volgin is also a supporter of the Brezhnev faction. He is known throughout the West as "Thunderbolt", and is a most dangerous individual. During the Second World War, Volgin was assigned to operate behind friendly lines in order to execute anyone who attempted to escape. In addition, Volgin was involved in the Katyn Forest Massacre in which 25,000 Polish citizens were rounded up and executed. Volgin boasts about the amount of people he has killed, the "anti-communists" he had successfully eliminated from the Motherland. Prior to the Virtuous Mission, Volgin had allied himself with Aleksandr Granin, gaining himself control over the Granin Design Bureau - OKB-812. However, sometime later the two fell out and Volgin turned his attention to acquiring Sokolov and the new Shagohod project he was working on.

During the Virtuous Mission, Volgin succeeds in apprehending Sokolov thanks to the COBRA Unit, and launches one of the two portable nuclear warheads (given to him by The Boss) at the Sokolov Design Bureau, completely destroying it and causing an international crisis between the United States and the Soviet Union. With Sokolov now back in his possession, Volgin forces him to finish working on the Shagohod. After Snake infilitrates Tselinoyarsk again, Volgin orders The Boss to dispose of him before the completion of the Shagohod and the final testing of the weapon. As the COBRAs are wiped out one by one, Volgin grows more and more agitated and frustrated at their inability to kill the intruder. Volgin met Snake once again when he was in the disguise of Major Raikov, Volgin's lover. Volgin easily saw through Snake's disguise and began to relentlessly beat up the defenseless Snake, knocking him completely out. Afterwards, Volgin 'interrogated' both Snake and Sokolov, but ended up killing the latter - something which he nevertheless enjoyed.

After a lengthy torture session and the loss of Snake's eye, Volgin gives up and contently leaves the room. Upon Snake's return to Groznyj Grad, Volgin apprehends Snake once again, this time facing him in combat mano a mano. Volgin is ultimately defeated, though he later boards the Shagohod and pursues Snake and EVA throughout the fortress. After a long battle, Volgin and the Shagohod are both defeated and Volgin is struck down by a bolt of lightning, setting him on fire and eventually killing him.

Nikolai Stephanovich Sokolov

Sokolov was the original designer of the Shagohod, a nuclear equipped tank with the ability to launch nuclear ICBMs from anywhere on the planet's surface. Prior to the Shagohod, Sokolov worked in the field of space rockets, helping to invent the A1 Vostock rocket which enabled Yuri Gagarin to enter orbit. Afterwards, Sokolov was appointed the head of OKB-754 - better known as the Sokolov Design Bureau. After working on the Shagohod, Sokolov later began to grow afraid of what he was creating - a crisis of conscience. In light of this, Sokolov chose to defect to the West - a task that wouldn't be easy. However, sometime later, a western operative succeeded in getting Sokolov over the Berlin Wall and into the West. The man who organised the retrieval was Major Zero.

Only a week later, the Cuban Missile Crisis occured which brought the world to the edge of all-out nuclear war. During secret talks between the United States and the Soviet Union, the Americans agreed to return Sokolov to the Soviet Union - an act which Sokolov was most reluctant to go ahead with. Some time later, Sokolov first met with Naked Snake (Big Boss), who had been ordered to rescue him. Unfortunately, Sokolov was captured by the COBRA Unit - which was now working for Col. Volgin, who planned on using Sokolov to complete the Shagohod. As Sokolov is finishing work on the Shagohod, he meets up with Naked Snake once again - this time in the West Wing of the Weapons Lab at Groznjy Grad. Sokolov was later beaten to death by Volgin during an interrogation.

Eva

Supposedly an operative working for the KGB, EVA is in fact an agent of the Chinese branch of the Philosophers. Claiming to be an NSA codebreaker, Eva succeeds in gaining the trust of Naked Snake in her attempts to acquire the Philosophers' Legacy - an enormous sum of money pooled together by the three great powers - China, Russia and the U.S. Eva first meets Snake during his return to Rassvet during Operation Snake Eater, at which point she introduces herself as one of the NSA codebreakers and provides Snake with a specially modifed Colt M1911. Unknown to Snake, Eva is also portraying herself as Tatyana, Sokolov's woman. Via this disguise she spies on Volgin's activities and tries to find the Philosophers' Legacy. Eva assists Snake throughout his mission in order to help advance her own agenda, helping him infilitrate the fortress of Groznyj Grad by providing him with unguarded ways in. Unfortunately for Eva, Col. Volgin eventually sees through her disguise as Tatyana and discovers that she had been sending coded messages to the Chinese. The Boss aids in Eva's escape, who saw through EVA completely, noticing that she was in fact working for the Chinese branch of the Philosophers.

As a result of this, The Boss tells Eva not to kill Snake, since that it was her mission would have ultimately ended with. Upon Snake's prevailance over Volgin and his escape from the main hangar of Groznyj Grad, Eva is waiting nearby with a motorcycle - ready for them to make their escape from the entire facility. However, a now unhinged Volgin pursues them in the fully operational Shagohod, which unfortunately wasn't destroyed as planned. Eva helps Snake take on the Shagohod and Volgin, though they are successful in putting an end to the madman, Eva is seriously wounded during their escape. Despite her injury, Eva leads Snake to a waiting escape vehicle - a prototype plane known as a WiG (Wing-in-Ground) aircraft. After Snake defeats his mentor, The Boss, both of them take off and begin to make their escape. However, Ocelot pursues them using a Williams X-Jet, which he then uses to ram down one of the doors to the WiG and gain entry. On board the WiG, a scuffle takes place between Snake and Ocelot, though Ocelot later draws his gun and prepares to shoot Snake. Eva throws Snake another gun with which to defend himself. After a quick draw duel using a blank round, Ocelot jumps ship leaving Eva and Snake to escape.

With the mission deemed a success, Eva and Snake spend some quality time together, though after Snake had fallen asleep, Eva prepares to make her move to assassinate Snake - which was the final part of her mission. However, operating under the request of The Boss, Eva does not carry out the assassination and leaves Snake alive with the information that she was in fact a spy. After she had left, Eva left behind a recording talking about her real mission. As it happens, Eva was trained in one of the many 'schools' run by the Philosophers, and that she was an operative working for the Chinese branch of the Philosophers. After Operation Snake Eater, Eva escapes back to China with what she believes to be the microfilm containing the Philosophers' Legacy. However, Ocelot had replaced the microfilm she had with a fake, taking the real one back with him to the American branch of the Philosophers. In 1968, during the Vietnam War, Eva disappeared without a trace in Hanoi.

Aleksandr Leonovitch Granin

Granin is well known by both as the East and the West as an accomplished scientist. It was he who designed the mobile ballistic missile system known as SS-1C. In light of his proud achievements, Granin was awarded with numerous awards including the Order of Lenin. Granin gladly claims that it was thanks to him that the Allies were able to defeat Nazi Germany in WWII. Granin's greatest accomplishment would be his design for a new type of bipedal walking tank, one which walked on legs instead of tracks. Despite his endeavours, it was Sokolov's project that was chosen over his, much to Granin's chagrin.

Naked Snake encounters Granin during the Snake Eater mission, where the scientist is busy getting himself drunk in order to forget about his bitterness. Granin assists Snake, providing him with a way to infilitrate Groznjy Grad, the armed fortress where the Shagohod is being developed. Granin also asks Snake to rescue Sokolov as well as destroy the Shagohod. Unfortunately for Granin, Volgin heard about his betrayal and as such he interrogated and eventually killed Granin. Granin's designs for a Metal Gear would later be acquired by the U.S. government, and ultimately, the Patriots.

General Ivan Raidenovich Raikov

Ivan Raidenovitch Raikov is a part of the Russian military intelligence agency known as GRU and Colonel Volgin's gay lover/concubine. Raikov is defeated and stripped by Naked Snake, who uses his clothes to disguise himself in Groznyj Grad to get to the Shagohod. Raikov's patronymic (a personal name based on the name of one's father), Raidenovitch, means "Son of Raiden"; "Raiden" is Japanese for "lightning".

THE SHAGOHOD   (treading behemoth)

A mobile nuclear launch platform. Its name means 'The Treading Behemoth'. With the aid of boosters, it can fire warheads at a maximum speed of 500km/h, and acheives a range of 10,000km.

STORY

The story of Metal Gear Solid 3 takes place in the mid-60's just before America had entered into the Vietnam War a year later. It was a time of tension as both sides of the world's superpowers collided against eachother. The United States and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics went head to head with the use of threats presented by the new technological weapon known as the Nuclear Bomb. Now, with the help of the US Goverment and a Goverment funded project with collobration of the CIA, a new Special Forces Unit was created known as FOX. Its purpose was to go behind enemy lines and do the wet work without the other side knowning who it was. Major Zero leads the newly formed FOX unit into its first mission in the heart of Russia with their first candidate...a veteran of warfare -- Jack, aka Naked Snake.

The Virtuous Mission

On August 24, 1964, Naked Snake, an operative of the newly formed FOX Unit was sent to Russia to rescue Sokolov, a defecting Russian scientist. He was being held in Rassvet which was surrounded by guards. To get to Rassvet, however, Snake had to parachute in by performing the world’s first ever HALO (High Altitude - Low Opening) jump, landing in Tselinoyarsk. His support team who kept in touch with him via Codec were Major Zero, Para-medic and The Boss.

Snake familiarized himself with the area and the members of the FOX unit, and then proceeded to Rassvet, to meet Sokolov. As Snake and Sokolov began to make their way to the extraction point, they were ambushed by KGB operatives and held at gunpoint. The KGB agents were then surrounded and killed by the Ocelot Unit being led by Ocelot, part of a rogue GRU faction intent on capturing Sokolov for themselves. Snake, using his hand-to-hand CQC techniques, managed to disable all the Ocelot Unit members while Sokolov escaped.

When they reached the rope bridge Sokolov pointed to the top of a nearby mountain, where Sokolov’s Shagohod, a huge tank capable of firing a nuclear missile across large distances, was being tested. On their way over the bridge they were greeted by the Boss, only to find out that she had defected to the Soviet Union. Sokolov was then captured by the Cobra Unit, and The Boss explained that Sokolov, along with a couple of Davy Crocketts (miniature nuclear shells) were her gift to her new hosts. Colonel Volgin, a man who carries an electrical charge of ten million volts, joined The Boss and Snake on the bridge. Volgin then told The Boss that she had to kill Snake, because he had seen Volgin's face. She attempted this by breaking his arm and throwing him off the bridge, secretly knowing full well that he would live through the fall.

Snake did survive, and tended to his wounds with the help of Para-Medic. Then something unexpected happened. Colonel Volgin decided to test one of the Davy Crocketts out, completely wiping out the OKB-754 research facility. This then led Kruschev to believe it was the US who blew it up as there was a US plane in Soviet air space, which was the plane the members of FOX were stationed in. In order to clear the United States' name, Snake would have to go back and eliminate Volgin and The Boss.

Operation Snake Eater

On August 30, nearly one week after the failure of the Virtuous Mission, Snake is once again deployed into Tselinoyarsk by a D-21 drone launched from an M-21, with Sigint replacing The Boss on his support team. Snake then had to meet ADAM, a KGB agent sent to assist him during Operation Snake Eater, at Rassvet. On the way to meet ADAM, Snake ran into the Boss and she tried to stop him from carrying on with his mission, along with dismantling his gun. He then reached Rassvet and waited for ADAM but instead EVA showed up. As Snake rested and EVA kept a look out, the Ocelot Unit showed up. EVA woke Snake up and he told her to go and hide, while he took care of them. After defeating the Unit, Ocelot grabbed EVA. She managed to escape and hop onto her bike, as Ocelot ran away. EVA then mentioned she had to get back before he did, and she cleared a path for Snake. Snake then headed to Graniny Gorki to see Sokolov. On the way he battled Ocelot overlooking a crevice. Once Ocelot was defeated the area was swarmed by Hornets, and Snake fell down the crevice into the cave below.

Snake then ventured around the cave, eventually finding the exit. On his way he was attacked by The Pain. Once Snake had beaten The Pain, he left the cave and headed toward a warehouse. When he got there he looked on with his scope and saw The End being pushed in a wheelchair by The Fear, along with Volgin, The Boss, Sokolov and Tatyana.

He then reached Graniny Gorki, where he thought he was going to meet Sokolov. Instead he found Granin, another Russian scientist, who was quite drunk. Granin told Snake about his Bi-pedal Tank which he explains as “a sort of… Metal Gear,” (named so for being a missing link between infantry and artillery) and insulted Sokolov's Shagohod. Granin then gave Snake a key card to help him get to Groznyj Grad, Volgin’s near impenetrable fortress. Granin then told Snake about a secret tunnel that runs around the perimeter of the base. Afterwards Snake left and headed towards the mountain Krasnogorje to meet up with EVA. As he walked back to the warehouse he passed earlier, he is ambushed by The Fear. Once The Fear was beaten he carried on towards Krasnogorje.

After leaving the warehouse again through the door he could only now access thanks to Granin, Snake was called by EVA to tell him that The End was waiting for him up ahead. On his way through the jungle Snake heard The End calling out to him, saying theirs will be a grand battle. After a long and tiring battle in which The End was eventually defeated, the way to Krasnogorje was opened up and Snake makes his way to the mountain to meet up with EVA. When they met up, Snake saw EVA getting changed and figured out that she was also Tatyana. She then handed him a key that he could use to get into the underground tunnel. Snake stepped out onto the mountain side, and caught a good view of Groznyj Grad. He looked through his scope, and saw Volgin pummeling away at an oil canister, with blood seeping out the bottom. When Volgin hit it up into the air, Snake noticed Granin’s lifeless body fall out of it.

On his way to Groznyj Grad via the tunnels, he was confronted by the last member of the Cobra Unit, The Fury. After yet another battle Snake defeated The Fury and was chased into another tunnel by blazing trails of fire caused by The Fury's exploding corpse.

Snake then headed up a ladder, infiltrating the heart of Groznyj Grad. Snake proceeded to locate and knock out Major Ivan Raidenovich Raikov, in order to use his clothes as a disguise and get closer to Sokolov. After finding him he obtained the launch data for the Shagohod and told Sokolov that he plans on destroying it. But as he went to leave he was caught by Volgin and The Boss. He was then captured and tortured by Volgin shortly after Volgin killed Sokolov. A while later Volgin cautiously accused The Boss of being a spy and told her that, to prove her innocence, she must cut out Snake's eye. Just as she was about to, Tatyana (EVA) pulled her away, demanding that she stops. Ocelot then accused Tatyana of being a spy and puts her to a test of luck. He juggled his three guns (with one containing a single bullet) and fires one randomly six times. As he was about to shoot her, Snake knocked into Ocelot making him fling one of his guns into the air, and as Ocelot caught it he accidentally shot Snake's right eye out. The Boss then shot a transmitter into Snake's leg.

Snake then escaped from Groznyj Grad with the help of EVA, and made his way into the underground sewer system being chased by Ocelot and his Ocelot Unit. Just as they caught up with him he leaped off a drainage waterfall into the river below. He started drowing and had a near death experience in which he met The Sorrow, who showed him the souls of everyone he had killed during the mission. Snake passed the Sorrow's test by escaping their restless spirits and awakened, choking on water below the surface of the river. Having drifted much further downstream, he swam to the riverbank, and went on to meet up with EVA in a nearby cave. She gave him some stolen C3, and told him he could use it to blow up the Shagohod. Snake headed back into Groznyj Grad.

Once inside he planted the C3 onto various fuel containers scattered around the Shagohod’s hangar before being spotted by Ocelot and Volgin. Volgin declared that he had discovered that Tatyana was a spy and explained to Snake about The Philosophers Legacy, a vast sum of money collected by the most powerful men in Russia, America and China, known as the Philosophers. Snake and Volgin then fought and Snake valiantly defeated Volgin and escaped from Groznyj Grad with EVA, just as the C3 went off. But on their way to the exit of Groznyj Grad, the Shagohod burst from the hangar, with Volgin in the driver’s seat. He then chased Snake and EVA out of Groznyj Grad and the two managed to blow up a bridge outside of Groznyj Grad (which EVA had planted C3 on earlier) hoping to take the Shagohod with it.

At first it seemed they were successful but the Shagohod shot out of the water and onto the cliff where Snake and EVA were. Snake and EVA then drove around the Shagohod, destroying it’s main controls. Volgin then stepped out of the Shagohod, ripping various cables and holding onto them, using his bodies’ electrical current to control the Shagohod. Eventually, Snake shot Volgin and Volgin stopped, having become quite exhausted. A storm had formed around them, and from it a thunderbolt struck Volgin. This caused the bullet bandoliers he had strapped around his chest to explode, killing him in the process.

Snake and EVA then headed to the WIG they planned to escape in. Snake then left EVA temporarily, in order to go and fight The Boss. The Boss talked told him about how she once had a child on the battlefield, and how that child was taken by The Philosophers. She also explained how she picked him as a pupil because they were both Atomic test subjects, as well as infertile. She explained that she was the first American to be sent into space, and how it was kept a secret from the public. She then declares that Snake’s mission is to defeat her, whether he wants to or not. It is his mission, and he must see it through, and whoever wins will also win the title of Boss. The two then have a huge and epic battle, both of them putting their heart and souls into the fight. Snake eventually defeated The Boss and they share a final moment together before she requested that he shoot her with her own gun, The Patriot.

Snake then went to the WIG to leave with EVA, but as they were leaving Ocelot arrived and challenged Snake to one last duel.

After the two draw, Ocelot left and Snake and EVA headed home. When they get back they joke and share a night of passion together. The next morning Snake awoke, only to find an audio message waiting for him. It was left by EVA and she explained that, from the beginning she was a Chinese-American spy, sent by The Philosophers to get the Legacy back for China. She then explained about the true meaning of The Boss’ last mission.

From the beginning The Boss knew that she was to fall to Snake. Her final mission, given by the U.S. government, was to be killed by her most beloved pupil. That was her mission, and she saw it through to the end, like a true soldier. Snake was arranged to see President Lyndon Johnson. Johnson awards Snake the title of Big Boss, and offers his hand for a handshake. Big Boss reluctantly shakes his hand, and turns away. The director of the CIA also offers his hand, but Big Boss leaves. Devastated, he goes to The Boss’ Grave which reads “A Patriot, Who Saved The World.” Big Boss laid down a flower, the same ones that were at the field where they fought and he also laid down The Patriot, The Boss’ gun. He salutes as tears began to fall down his face.

After the credits rolls, Ocelot is heard talking with the head of the CIA, stating that the copy of The Philosopher’s Legacy handed to Big Boss (which EVA eventually stole) was a fake. Ocelot anticipated that EVA would steal it and gave Big Boss the fake. The Legacy makes its way back to America in the hands of Ocelot, who was triple crossing Volgin and the CIA. He is actually a soldier of The Philosophers, and he planned on using the money to revive their American faction.
