Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was originally released on the Playstation 2, and was then re-released for the same system with new features under the name "Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance".

Prior to the  release of Substance, there was a DVD (although only playable on a Playstation 2) called "The Document of Metal Gear Solid 2", which featured five playable levels of VR training, and a slew of behind the scenes information including artwork, videos, text, character models, and interactive 3D layouts of various locations in the game.

As a child, Raiden was adopted by Solidus Snake (later also known as George Sears), who (unbeknownst to him) had killed his parents. He was given the name "Jack" by Solidus, who taught Jack how to kill, in order for him to join his child army during the Liberian Civil War in the 80s. His outstanding kill record earned him nicknames, such as "White Devil" and "Jack the Ripper" (according to Solidus).

Liberian Civil War

Raiden became a child soldier from as young as the age of six, in Solidus' "Army of the Devil" as part of the "small boys unit" during the first Liberian Civil War. Like the rest of his unit, he was regularly drugged in order to be conditioned and kept under control. Survival meant he was commended and rewarded, and killing to survive became his only purpose. He was trained personally by Soldius, to the extent that Solidus declared, "Your name... your skills... everything you know, you learned from me." Due to Jack's outstanding kill record, he gained a number of nicknames, two of the most prominent being "Jack the Ripper" and "White Devil", the latter probably in reference to his pale skin and fair hair. When the war ended, Jack was one of the survivors, and Solidus lost track of him.

Early Career In America

After the end of the Civil War, Jack left Liberia for the United States and eventually forgot his past. There he joined the Task Force 21 Corps, where he received further training, and possible mental reconditioning (or else he surpressed his bloody childhood memories, as he had no recollection of them until Solidus jogged his memory when they met again years later) before being eventually deployed on the ill-fated Big Shell mission. He also trained through various VR (virtual reality) simulations, including some which were based on the Shadow Moses and Tanker incidents that Solid Snake was a major participant in.

On April 30th 2007, Jack met Rosemary, who eventually became his girlfriend. Jack loved Rose deeply, but his harsh experiences had left him melancholic and emotionally distant, and he constantly shut her out of his problems. Rose was persistent in getting Jack to open up to her, even during his missions, which became a constant source vexation for him. It isn't until the Big Shell incident that Jack regains his memories and finally opens up to her, explaining that his past had for a long time been a jumbled mess, and even though it haunted him he could never quite put it together to figure out why. Jack's revelation later brings Rose closer to him.

Manhattan Incident

At the beginning of the Big Shell mission, he was shortly referred to as Snake (perhaps he inherited it from Solid Snake, this is unknown however) before his codename was quickly changed to Raiden by Colonel Campbell because the leader of the terrorists was also referring to himself as Solid Snake (later revealed to actually be Solidus Snake).

Quite late into the mission it was revealed that Raiden was merely a puppet of The Patriots, his entire mission was a lie (a scripted event devised by the Patriots), the Colonel he was speaking to was actually GW, an AI created by the Patriots, posing as the Colonel. They were telling him that he was just a weapon ... a creation of the Patriots with no purpose but what they made for him.

He dates Rosemary, but towards the end of the mission she revealed she was just a Spy sent by the Patriots to keep an eye on him, before she eventually fell in true love with him. She also told Jack that she was pregnant. She said to him "See me for what I am, okay?" and he nodded, and they agreed to find their future together.

A man resembling Roy Campbell served as Raiden's commanding officer during the Big Shell incident. However, this Colonel was later revealed to be an artificial construct created by The Patriots and generated by GW, Arsenal Gear's supercomputer.

Much of Rose's true past is unknown. Rose is in actuality a Patriot spy. She was ordered by the Patriots to change her appearance to match what Raiden would find to be his perfect match. As a result she changed her appearance, clothing style, even the color of her eyes in order to meet the standards of Raiden's psyche profile.

Rose met Jack (Raiden) in front of Federal Hall two years prior to the Big Shell incident. A group of middle-aged Japanese women came up and asked me Raiden which building King Kong was climbing in the movie. Raiden told them it was the Chrysler Building. Rose overheard the conversation and told him that he was wrong at that it was the Empire State Building. The two argued about the matter so long that the tourists had already left. They ended up going to the Skyscraper Museum in Battery Park to see who had the better recall. However, by the time they got there the museum was closed. The two departed from there.

The next day, by "coincidence" the two discovered that they worked in the same military base. Rose and Jack went on their first date that night to the Empire State building. After that they went back to Jack's apartment and watched King Kong a bunch of times, before they were presumably intimate. As per the Patriot's orders, the two began dating. Though during the relationship, Jack would often be distant and not let Rose know too much about himself or his past. He would never spend the entire night with her and would never let her into his room. Eventually, Rose forced her way into his room. Inside, she discovered a empty, barren room. Only a small bed and a desk was within the room. Rose's forced entry enraged Raiden and caused him to raise his hand against her.

Two years after they first met, Raiden was called in for his mission to the Big Shell. Rosemary was also called in as Raiden's support during the mission, under the orders of the Patriots. This upset Raiden, but he soon accepted her being involved in the mission. Rose supported Raiden on his mission by giving him information, saving his progress, and having conversations. Late in the mission, Raiden was captured by the enemy. Rose contacted him in order to give him her support. It was then that he told Rose of his true past as a child soldier. Soon after that, unknown to Raiden, Rose was removed from the operation and held by the Patriots.

After Raiden had stopped Arsenal and killed Solidus, Rose was apparently released (or just allowed to leave, without force) by the Patriots. The two talked a bit and Rose revealed that she was pregnant. Jack then proposed to Rosemary. They then seek their own future together.

After the events of Shadow Moses, Nastasha Romanenko and Otacon formed an Anti-Metal Gear Group known as Philanthropy. Otacon recieved an anonymous tip from someone calling themself "E.E." (the initials of Otacon's younger step sister) that a new Metal Gear, codenamed Metal Gear RAY, was being developed by the Marine Corps., and was being sent via a Marine vessel disguised as an Oil Tanker.

Snake quickly made his way through and found his way down into the holds where RAY was being held. Shortly after taking photographic evidence of Metal Gear RAY, Revolver Ocelot appeared and claimed to be taking RAY back "to it's rightful owners." He is then posessed by Liquid Snake's arm, which was attached to replace the arm he lost in Shadow Moses. Solid Snake then jumped from his hiding place and confronted Liquid but it was too late; Liquid climbed aboard Metal Gear Ray and sank the tanker with Solid Snake still inside. Luckily, Otacon was waiting by the Manhattan shore with a small boat, which he used to rescue Snake and replace his body with that of Liquid Snake's, leading people to believe that Solid Snake was dead. Solid Snake was also entirely blamed for the incident leading Olga Gurlukovich and Fortune to blame him for the death of their fathers (Colonel Gurlukovich and Commander Scott Dolph respectively).

Another two years later, Snake disguised himself as Iroquois Pliskin and infiltrated the Big Shell. Rumors of another Metal Gear, Arsenal Gear, were spreading like wildfire. There, he met Raiden and eventually met his other brother, the final of the three Sons Of Big Boss, Solidus Snake. He also once again met Olga and explained to her that it was infact Revolver Ocelot who killed her father, Colonel Gurlukovich. Snake later helped Raiden, Otacon and Emma Emmerich (Otacon's Sister) install the re-programmed computer virus, a digital counterpart of FOXDIE, into GW (Arsenal Gear's AI system), shortly before Emma dies after being stabbed by Vamp. Then once aboard Arsenal Gear, Snake and Raiden make their way through fighting the army of Arsenal Tengu soldiers. Once they reach the end Fortune challenges Snake to a fight claiming he killed her father. He signals for Raiden to carry on as he fights her. He then tells her that it was Revolver Ocelot who killed Scott Dolph and that they should work together in order to kill Liquid Ocelot. Later on, ontop of Arsenal Gear, Liquid Ocelot steals metal gear RAY, Snake breaks free of his handcuffs he's wearing and leaps after Liquid Ocelot, afixing a tracker onto his RAY. He then goes to Manhattan to see Raiden after he has defeated Solidus, and tells him that himself and Otacon are going to find the Patriots, only to later find out that all twelve members were already dead a hundred years ago.

Otacon was forced to fake his death after being framed by The Patriots in the beginning of the tanker incident, but came out of hiding after he learned that Emma, his sister, was working for them. He managed to get her to change her ways, but she died shortly afterwards. Despite falling into deep despair, Snake encouraged him to move on and rescue all the hostages held in the Big Shell. Appeareantly he's successful in this, and stays in contact to support Raiden until he defeated Solidus Snake.

When Snake met back with Otacon (supposedly at their hideout) he was given the disk to go over that contained the data of The Patriots names and whereabouts. After this (The ending note) Otacon told Solid Snake about The Patriots information on the disc. One of the names was the biggest contributor to Philanthropy's cause, but apparently the whole lot of them had been dead for more than 100 years...Otacon's current whereabouts are unknown, but it is assumed that he's still trying to unravel more the mystery of The Patriots while still working with Snake in Philanthropy.

Fortune is the codename of Helena Dolph Jackson, a leading member of Dead Cell. Her codename refers to her seemingly supernatural ability to have bullets that come into her direction pass around her and also turn explosives into duds. She is also known as Lady Luck and has earned the title of "Queen" among her Dead Cell comrades. She is armed with a large-sized railgun during combat.

She was the daughter of Scott Dolph, Commandant of the Marine Corps, and wife of Colonel Jackson, founder of Dead Cell. Helena led a largely uneventful life until the sudden death of her father during the Tanker incident in 2007. A few months later, her husband, Commander Reginald Jackson was convicted of mishandling federal funds and was found guilty; furthermore, Helena's mother committed suicide and Commander Jackson himself died while serving out his sentence. Helena was unable to cope with the systematic loss of each of her close relatives and miscarried her unborn child of three months, essentially losing her entire family.

Helena was informed that the man responsible for her father's death was none other than Solid Snake, the mercenary allegedly responsible for sinking the tanker. In her search for vengeance, she joined the armed forces and found out that she is impervious to bullets. Because of this mysterious power, she was deemed Lady Luck by her comrades. She was quickly assigned to her husband's former unit, Dead Cell, and was welcomed with open arms by the team, especially Vamp, who was rumored to be her father's former bisexual lover. She and Vamp would later become very close friends. She was assigned the codename of Fortune and quickly gained leader status.

Fortune was one of the Dead Cell members who survived its liquidation, and six months later, on April 29th, 2009, Dead Cell joined the Sons of Liberty and was involved in the Big Shell takeover. Dead Cell confronted alleged FOXHOUND member Raiden's a few times, before confronting Snake personally within Arsenal Gear. Instead of killing Snake, Fortune took him prisoner and delivered him to Solidus Snake, leader of the Sons of Liberty (the terrorist group that seized the Big Shell). Shortly after, Revolver Ocelot revealed that the Big Shell takover was nothing more than a simulated version of the Shadow Moses incident and that Fortune's role in it was not coincidential. The deaths of her family members were planned by The Patriots and her invulnerability to bullets was simply the result of a machinery-projected electromagnetic force field which surrounded her body; Ocelot confirmed the latter revelation by shooting Fortune in her chest. However, Ocelot missed her heart (as Ocelot had forgotten that Fortune was born with dextrocardia) and the fatally-wounded Fortune stood up against him. When Ocelot launched missiles directed at her and the others with Metal Gear RAY, she managed to deflect them telekinetically, leading Solid Snake to believe that her powers and luck in the battlefield might not have been entirely due to the Patriots after all. Fortune then died from her gunshot wound shortly afterwards.

Vamp is one of the surviving members of Dead Cell involved in the Big Shell incident. He has vampire-like attributes, including a taste for blood, the ability to run across or stand on the surface of water or vertical walls, superhuman speed and agility, and the ability to shrug off what would typically be a mortal wound (e.g. being shot in the head). (Other than the haematophagy, he doesn't seem to have any other traditional vampire weakness, however.) Besides the vampiric abilities, he is also an expert with both combat knives and throwing knives. His codename refers not his vampire-like abilities, but to his bisexuality.

Originally from Romania, Vamp lost his entire family during a church bombing when he was a child and was forced to survive while being pierced on a crucifx for two days by feeding on the blood of his family, acquiring him his taste for blood. He is bisexual, and was the former lover of Marine Commandant Scott Dolph, Fortune's father. Because of this, he and Fortune have a very close friendship, being more loyal to each other than to any other member of the Sons of Liberty, even their own Dead Cell teammate Fatman.

During the Big Shell incident, Vamp rebels with the rest of Dead Cell, and joined the Sons of Liberty. He faces Raiden twice: first, in a close-in duel in an attempt to prevent Raiden and Emma Emmerich from disabling the GW AI, and second, when attempting to kidnap Emma as she attempts to go from one strut of the Big Shell to another by crossing the fence holding the oil spill inside the compound's boundaries. Both times Vamp is dispatched and apparently killed by Raiden, but not before Vamp inflicts Emma with a mortal wound. Vamp manages to survive and was spotted on the streets of New York City next to a yellow car when Arsenal Gear crashes into Federal Hall.

Solidus Snake is one of the three "Sons of Big Boss", created as part of the Les Enfants Terribles project. In the project, one of the clones was to carry all of Big Boss' recessive genes (Solid Snake), and one was to carry all of his dominant genes (Liquid Snake), and one was to have a perfect balance of dominant and recessive genes (Solidus).

"Solidus" means "neither Solid nor Liquid" which is fitting seeing as how Solidus is the perfect balance of his two brothers. Solidus' trademark gun is the FN P90 sub-machine gun, and he is often seen wielding two swords, nicknamed "Minshu" and "Kyouwa." (Democrat and Republican)

The Exoskeleton that Solidus wears was developed by the US army. It increases the wearers speed, strength and agility through the use of artificial muscle technology developed for Metal Gear Ray. It has two tentacles which can be used to grab or suffocate opponents and also has the ability to fire missiles. The tentacles can be ejected to increase speed. The suit is also equipped with an accelerator that allows the user to make quick movements across terrain, leaving a trail of flames in his path.

The early years of Solidus' life are unknown. The earliest bits we can piece together is that he fought in the Liberian Civil War. He also killed Raiden's parents, adopted him and taught him to be a ruthless killer, in order to fight in the Liberian Civil War at an extremely young age.

Solidus was also the 43rd President of the USA, being known as George Sears while he was in presidency. In the year 2005, and acting outside the orders of The Patriots he started the Shadow Moses incident in complete secrecy, telling Revolver Ocelot to persuade Liquid into stealing Metal Gear REX and use it for his own twisted ways. But because Solidus accidentally revealed the existence of Metal Gear REX and the GENOME Army to the public, he was removed from Presidency and went underground when he heard the Patriots were planning to kill him off. While underground he took ahold of Dead Cell as a way to gain power and destroy The Patriots.

He devised a plot with Ocelot, Olga Gurlukovich and the remaining members of Dead Cell to take over the Big Shell where rumours that a new highly advanced battle station known as Arsenal Gear was being developed there. Calling themselves the Sons of Liberty, Solidus assumed the identity of his presumed dead brother, Solid Snake, and kidnapped the current President James Johnson. Solidus planned on using a nuclear warhead from Arsenal to create a gigantic electro-magnetic-pulse over New York, and attempt to reveal the existence of The Patriots to the world. However, Solid Snake, Raiden and Otacon managed to put a stop to his plan. Solidus was then killed by Raiden when the two battled atop Federal Hall at the will of the Patriots.

Iroquois Pliskin serves in the Navy SEAL's as a Lieutenant Junior Grade. He doesn't seem a normal Lieutenant as SEAL officers give orders via the Command Post with the headphones which he wears. Pliskin knows a large amount about FOXHOUND, Dead Cell, and Olga's mercenary army. Pliskin also uses the Marines and SAS slogans: "Semper Fi" and "Who Dares, Wins", respectively.

He helps Raiden and Peter Stillman diffuse the bombs laid by Fatman around the Big Shell.

Iroquois later turns out to be Solid Snake in disguise.                                                        

Emma Emmerich Danziger, or E.E. as she is known to her close friends and family, is the step-sister of Otacon and the designer of G.W., Arsenal Gear's A.I. system.

After that, Hal left home. Emma blamed him for abandoning her when she needed him most. After that she grew a deep resentment for her brother. After the accident, Emma's mother took her to England and raised her there. After returning home to England, her mother married Robinson, a businessman. Several years later, just before graduating from high school, Emma injured Robinson in self-defense during an alleged assault on her person (according to Documents, it was a sexual assault). As a result of this incident, she followed in the footsteps of her stepbrother, and left home to enroll in Oxford to become and majored in artificial intelligence and complex logic.

At this point, she was extremely angered by the fact that her brother failed to protect her. Consequently, she lost all family connections and became extremely resentful. While attending Oxford, she was noted for her success in a deciphering event sponsored by British GCHQ. After she graduated she was approached by the NSA for her computer genius which would be extremely useful in intelligence. Although she didn't join at first, the government leaked her the details of the Shadow Moses incident and her brother's involvement. Having a chance to get back at her brother, she joined them. As a test of her skill she was involved as one of the key crackers (professional hackers) in an incident that is famous among hackers. On January 24th 2000, the NAS facility in Fort Meade suffered a total system shutdown for a 73-hour period. The result was a full review of NSA's safety measures, which in turn led to the decision to shift the data-gathering operations to an isolated location that would be safe from physical attack as well as cyber-terrorism (in other words, the start of the Arsenal Gear project.)

As she grew up, Emma's remarkable talent for computers and technology became apparent. Whilst many details about her early life are unknown, she was eventually recruited by The Patriots and set to work on programming a highly advanced AI called GW, which would be used by the Patriots to control the flow of information and the imparting of Memes between the generations. Despite working for them, Emma knew very little about the organisation.

During the Big Shell incident, the facility developing Arsenal Gear, the armed mobile fortress which would house GW, was captured, and Emma was held as a hostage. Raiden, the chief protagonist of the game, was sent to rescue her, which he did after navigating a collapsed passage, which was flooded with water, and defeating Vamp, a member of Dead Cell, the group which captured the Big Shell. Raiden helped Emma to overcome her phobia, and the two of them made it back to the stable section of the Big Shell.

In order to meet with Solid Snake and Otacon, Emma had to cross a series of oil pipes, since the main bridge connecting the two halves of the facility had collapsed. Raiden defended her by covering her with a sniper rifle, but as she neared the end of the final pipe, she was attacked by Vamp, who had survived two deaths as a result of his supernatural powers. Although Raiden killed him 'again' by shooting him, Vamp stabbed Emma as he used her as a human shield.

Snake carried Emma to the office in Shell 1 Core, where she could administer a computer virus that would disable GW, which was modelled after FOXDIE. There she was reunited with her brother, and managed to install the virus. Tragically, despite the best efforts of Snake and Otacon, her bleeding wouldn't stop, and Emma died in her brother's arms. Her last words were "Please, call me Emma."

Olga Gurlukovich is the daughter of Sergei Gurlukovich, and a member of his private army, the Gurlukovich Mercenaries. She took command of her father's unit after his death. She was then forced into joining the Patriots, after they stole her daughter Sunny Gurlukovich. She worked as their agent, playing an important role in the Big Shell incident of 2009.

Olga led her father's mercenaries when they captured the transport ship Discovery in his attempt to seize Metal Gear RAY in 2007. Sergei's intention at the time was to use RAY as a super weapon with which to re-establish Russia as a major world Power (international). He boarded the ship with the help of Revolver Ocelot.

After the ship was secured, Sergei ordered Olga off the ship (out of concern for her unborn child), but she refused, and was subsequently confronted by Solid Snake. He shot her with a tranquiliser, and continued on his mission of surveying the Discovery, but later rescued her after Revolver Ocelot had killed Sergei and critically damaged the ship (however, Olga believed Snake had murdered her father.)

After this, Olga took command of her father's forces and became a renegade, joining a branch of the Russian Mafia, which was in reality controlled by the Patriots. After she gave birth, her child was taken hostage, and used as a means by which to force Olga into serving the Patriots.

Olga then joined the Sons of Liberty, who captured the Big Shell, and held President Johnson hostage. Olga was in fact working against her own men as an agent of the Patriots, her mission being to ensure the success of Raiden, a test subject of the S3 plan. So as to accomplish her mission, she disguised herself as a Cyborg Ninja, so that she could intervene without her cover being blown. Her suit bore an extreme similarity to that of Gray Fox, and wielded a high frequency blade, the weapon Fox had used during the Shadow Moses incident.

After Raiden was held aboard Arsenal Gear, Olga revealed herself to him, setting him free, and telling him of the S3 plan. Raiden, with the help of Solid Snake, escaped and was confronted by Solidus Snake. At this point, Olga revealed her true identity to all, including Solidus, determined to help Raiden, since his death would mean the murder of her child by the Patriots. After admitting her wrongs and imploring that Raiden survive for the sake of her innocent child, Solidus then killed Olga by executing her with his FN P90.

A leftover of the Cold War. Sergei was born and raised in Snezhinsk, formerly known as Chelyabinsk-70. Former Head of Spetznaz. Col. Sergei Gurlukovich became the leader of the Gurlukovich private militia, a heavily armed group of Russian mercenaries. During the Cold War, Sergei served in Spetznaz and worked within GRU where he met Revolver Ocelot. With the end of the Soviet Union, Gurlukovich brought together former Russian soldiers who had nowhere left to go, forming a mercenary army of at least a thousand strong. Carrying an utmost sense of patriotism to his country, Gurlukovich's ultimate ambitions were to restore 'Mother Russia' to her former glory.

Sometime before Shadow Moses, Sergei talked with Liquid Snake via Ocelot with the intention of joining in on Liquid's uprising. Hungry for the power that Metal Gear REX would offer him, Gurlukovich gave a Hind-D gunship to Liquid as a down payment for data on the REX project. Liquid however, disliked Gurlukovich, calling him more of a politician than a warrior. In addition, Liquid arranged for Gurlukovich's troops to ally themselves with the Genome Army, but this plan was ruined when Solid Snake destroyed REX.

Two years later, Gurlukovich heard word about a new Metal Gear being scheduled for transport via the Hudson River. His troops later seized the oil tanker which was transporting the Metal Gear, with Gurlukovich personally joining the mission along with his daughter Olga and Ocelot. Unfortunately for Gurlukovich, Ocelot betrays him, killing him and commandeering RAY.

Richard Ames serves as one of the Patriots' main operatives, as well as a member of the Secret Service. He holds the military rank of Colonel, and used to work for the Defense Intelligence Agency. Prior to the events which transpired at Shadow Moses, Richard Ames married Nastasha Romanenko, though the two couldn't agree on anything and eventually they fell out and divorced. In 2005, Ames was ordered by the Patriots to keep tabs on Solid Snake during the Shadow Moses incident. It was Ames who authorised the use of FOXDIE, which would effectively eliminate the members of FOXHOUND along with anyone who knew anything about what was really going on. Ames also ordered the arrest of the Secretary of Defense, Jim Houseman, also cancelling the nuclear strike originally ordered by Houseman. As a result, Ames used Houseman as a fall guy to help cover up the whole affair.

In 2009, Ames was ordered by the Patriots to watch over President Johnson. He meets up with Raiden, a so-called operative of FOXHOUND and informed him about what the terrorists had planned, as well as the activities of President Johnson. After both he and Raiden were confronted by Ocelot, Ames' own nanomachines were used to shut down his pacemaker, resulting in his death.

Peter Stillman was widely revered as THE expert on bomb disposal, with his name being mentioned in every explosives textbook out there. Five years prior to Big Shell, Stillman was responsible for the destruction of a church after he ran in fear during the disposal of a bomb. Ridden with guilt, Stillman faked an injury to his leg in order to gain sympathy from the public. Shortly after, Stillman retired from active bomb disposal and joined NAVSCOLEOD as a lecturer at Indian Head. It was during his time at Indian Head that Peter would meet Fatman, his future protege. Stillman saw Fatman as the son he never had, teaching him all the knowledge he knew about bombs without teaching him the more humanitarian things in life.

In 2009, Peter Stillman was called in to oversee the disposal of the bombs which had been rigged to the Big Shell. His orders were to supervise the disposal, but the plan failed to take off when SEAL Team 10 were wiped out by Dead Cell. Stillman retreated into the dining hall in Strut C, where he later encountered Raiden and Plisskin (Solid Snake in disguise). Stillman sent Plisskin and Raiden to defuse the bombs allotted around the Big Shell, fully aware that the bomber in question was none other than his former protege - Fatman. While investigating one of Fatman's larger bombs at the bottom of Strut H, Stillman accidentially triggered the countdown and was killed in the resulting explosion.

A mysterious figure who goes by the name Mr. X outfitted in an exoskeleton also trying to bring down Big Shell and Metal Gear Ray working with Iroquois Pliskin. This is actually Olga. She was in fact working against her own men as an agent of the Patriots, her mission being to ensure the success of Raiden, a test subject of the S3 plan. So as to accomplish her mission, she was disguised as a ninja at times, so that she could intervene without her cover being blown. Her suit bore a striking similarity to that of Gray Fox, and she too was capable of using a katana to deflect bullets.

An insignificant son of a senator, James Johnson was selected by the Patriots to become the 44th President of the United States and George Sears' successor. During the events of Shadow Moses, Johnson was Vice-President, serving in the Sears administration. In 2008, Johnson was elected as President, though this of course was just a charade played by the Patriots. One year later, Johnson visits the Big Shell during an 'inspection tour' of the facility along with numerous other VIPs. However, the Big Shell is taken over by armed terrorists led by Solidus Snake, and Johnson is immediately captured.

During a rescue attempt by SEAL Team 10, Johnson is successfully rescued though he is recaptured thanks to the efforts of Fortune and Vamp. Originally, Johnson planned on working together with Solidus, punching in the nuclear launch sequence himself. He later had doubts when Solidus planned on actually getting rid of the Patriots - an organisation, which in Johnson's mind, must continue to exist. After being relocated to the Shell 2 Core, an operative known as Raiden meets up with him, claiming to be a member of FOXHOUND.

Johnson informs Raiden about the real truth behind the country, the fact that the Patriots are the true leaders of the United States. After he has revealed all he can, Johnson demands that Raiden assassinate him before the launch sequence confirms his ID. However, this is taken care of by Ocelot, who shoots and mortally wounds Johnson. With his dying breaths, the President orders Raiden to find Emma Emmerich and to stop Solidus and Arsenal Gear.

Tanker Chapter

Following the incident on Shadow Moses Island, Metal Gear's top-secret technology was leaked into the black market through the machinations of Revolver Ocelot. As a result, countless variations of Metal Gear REX sprung up in every corner of the globe, making the weapon an increasingly common sight in the armed forces of nuclear powers. In the midst of all this, Solid Snake and Otacon formed “Philanthropy” an anti-Metal Gear organisation, whose sole purpose was to find and eradicate every Metal Gear in the world. On August 8th, 2007 Philanthropy has learned that a new Metal Gear, entitled Metal Gear RAY, is being developed by the U.S. Marines and was being transported secretly onboard the U.S.S. Discovery. However, just as Snake was about to begin his mission, the tanker was seized by a mysterious armed group. Snake and Otacon eventually identify the leader of the ‘terrorists’ as being Colonel Sergei Gurlukovich. Snake also encounters Olga Gurlukovich, Colonel Gurlukovich’s daughter. When Snake eventually infiltrated the holds of the Tanker where Metal Gear was being held, Revolver Ocelot, complete with a brand new arm, appeared and stated that he had come to steal Ray, and give it back to its rightful owners, and then proceeded to kill Colonel Scott Dolph (the leader of the marines who developed Metal Gear Ray) and Colonel Gurlukovich. Then he set off the C4 he had placed around the hold, which sprang a leak in the tanker. Snake ran from his hiding place, wading through the water which is flooding the dock and confronted Ocelot... Suddenly, Ocelot’s new arm starts twitching and Ocelot began to speak with the voice of Liquid Snake! Liquid quickly climbed aboard Metal Gear RAY and proceeded to sink the tanker with Solid Snake still inside of it.

Plant Chapter

Almost two years after the tanker incident, a gigantic off-shore clean up facility known as the Big Shell, has been built in order to clean up the mass-amount of oil that had been left from the sinking of the Discovery. The Big Shell itself has become a landmark, a symbol of environmental protection. The Big Shell was shaped like two hexagons connected end-on-end. At the centre of each "hexagon" is a Core (Core 1 and Core 2) each core is surrounded by six lettered Struts (Core 1 is surrounded by Struts A to F, Core 2 surrounded by Struts G to L.)

On April 29th, the 44th President, James Johnson, was taking a tour of the facility. Suddenly, Special Forces unit Dead Cell, being led by a man calling himself “Solid Snake”, took control of the facility, holding the president and several other men and women hostage. Their demands were $30 Billion in cash, and that if no-one complied with their demands they would fire a nuke directly into Manhattan.

New FOXHOUND agent Raiden, fresh from VR Training, was sent into the Big Shell in order to rescue the President and discover if the terrorists had the ability to really launch a nuclear strike, and to stop them if they did. His support team were FOXHOUND commander Colonel Campbell, and Rose who was Raiden’s girlfriend. As Raiden begun his mission, on he discovered SEAL Team 10’s bloody corpses filling the halls of Strut B, and inside he found Vamp, a member of Dead Cell, sucking the blood of one of the SEALs. Iroquois Pliskin, than ran in and attacked Vamp, before Vamp threw him up against the wall. Vamp then commented that Pliskin had a “familiar smell.” Vamp then vanished, and Pliskin told Raiden that he was a member of the Navy SEAL’s SEAL Team 10, who were sent into the Big Shell to rescue the president. Pliskin then said he was feeling tired, as Vamp had cut his arm. Raiden then headed to Strut C, where he met Peter Stillman who told both Raiden and Pliskin how to neutralize the various bombs that had been planted around the Shell by Fatman. Using a special coolant spray, and a sensor that was made to sniff out Fatman’s signature cologne scent he leaves on his bombs, Raiden and Pliskin located and neutralized all the bombs. During, Rose gave Raiden a call, and asked hi if he knew what day it was tomorrow. Confused, he replied that he didn’t know, but he would try his hardest to remember. As Pliskin froze the last bomb, it turned out that all the bombs were a decoy, leading them away from the two main bombs, planted in Strut A and Strut H, respectively. Raiden neutralized one, but as Stillman was about to finish off the other it exploded, taking half of the Big Shell with it.

As Raiden made his way outside, he was confronted by Fortune, another member of Dead Cell, who claimed that she could not be killed. As Raiden stepped out to face her, she commented that he was not who she was looking for, but that he still may be able to give her death. As Raiden attempted to defeat Fortune, he received a call from Campbell telling him that Fatman has requested Raiden’s presence atop of Strut E. At that moment, the lift behind Fortune descends and Vamp steps out from the lift. Raiden then went to shoot Fortune but the bullet swerved out of the way, striking Vamp in his head. Fortune begins to mourn the loss as Raiden snuck out into the lift. As Fortune cried, Vamp opened his eyes and said:

Raiden then headed to Strut E, and confronted Fatman. After endlessly running around dismantling his bombs, Raiden eventually defeated Fatman, and diffused the biggest bomb in the Big Shell. As Raiden headed to Core 1, he met another Cyborg Ninja similar to the one during the Shadow Moses incident and the Ninja gave him a uniform he could use to infiltrate the Shell 1 Core. Raiden then managed to infiltrate the Shell 1 Core and located Richard Ames. They talked briefly, Ames explaining that the Tanker Incident was planned solely for the purpose of building the Big Shell as a cover up for a new Metal Gear, and that the ransom of $30 Billion was just a ruse, the nuclear strike had been the objective of the terrorists all along!

Just then, Ocelot walked out, and Raiden placed his disguise back on. But before anyone could react, Ames suffered a heart attack, and died. Raiden was then discovered by Ocelot just as the Ninja returned to help Raiden escape. Raiden then headed to President Johnson’s location, but on his way was confronted by the leader of Dead Cell. The man was not Solid Snake, but Solidus Snake, the last of the three “Sons of Big Boss”, and Pliskin was Solid Snake in disguise all along.

Raiden then headed to meet the president and ran into Olga, who was talking to Solidus over a radio. He then walked into the President’s room and was told about The Patriots, a secret organization who secretly rules over America, even deciding who the next President would be. He also explained how Solidus wanted to challenge them, even if it meant the destruction of the entire world. He also discovered that the Big Shell was merely a cover up for Arsenal Gear; a gigantic mobile fortress that used mass-produced pilot less Metal Gear RAY’s to defend itself. Arsenal Gear had the ability to fire nukes from anywhere on the planet, and was also being used to filter out information regarding the Patriots from the internet, and other such media. The AI created to do this was called GW (named for President George Washington.)

Johnson’s last request was that he find Emma Emmerich, Otacon’s step-sister, and get her to eradicate GW. Johnson then demanded that Raiden shoot him, eliminating the possibility of a nuclear strike, when Raiden refused to shoot him, Johnson attempted to grab Raiden's gun and point it at himself. Revolver Ocelot eventually intervened, shooting Johnson before Raiden could act.

Raiden then headed to find Emma Emmerich, Otacon’s step-sister. On the way he fought and defeated Vamp, confused as to how he could still possibly be alive. Raiden then took Emma to the Shell 1 Core, going across the oil fence at the bottom of the Big Shell. Just as Emma was about to make it to the other side, she was stabbed by Vamp who was defeated once again. Snake then ran to Emma, picking her up and taking her to the Shell 1 Core. When Raiden got there they were inputting the virus that Emma created to destroy GW. Emma and Otacon shared one final moment together before she died. At that moment, Snake discovered that the virus hadn’t installed properly, and the trio came up with a plan to get inside Arsenal Gear, their only choice now being to take out Solidus and his men.

Snake mentioned to Raiden that they may need a hand getting inside, as The Ninja appeared again and revealed him self to actually have been Olga in disguise. Raiden was then knocked unconscious by Olga, with Snake saying that he didn’t ever recall saying he was on Raiden’s side.

When Raiden came to, he was tied to a torture bed completely naked. Solidus and Ocelot talk to him, Solidus remembering that he taught Raiden everything he knew, acting as sort of a Godfather, when Raiden’s real parents died. After the two leave, Olga walked in and told Raiden about her child, whom she had never met because it was stolen by The Patriots. Olga then leaves and Raiden’s hold were released. Raiden then got a call from Rose, and she nervously told Raiden that she had been a spy for the Patriots all along. She became his girlfriend, simply to keep check on him, but truly fell in love with him, but her transmission was eventually cut-off with her final words being “Jack… I’m… pregnant, Jack…” Raiden, distressed, pressed on and met up with Snake and the two then battled their way through the Arsenal Tengu, an army who guard Arsenal Gear from the inside. On the way, Otacon discovered that the Colonel Campbell, who had been helping Raiden throughout the mission, wasn’t the real Colonel, but an AI created by GW, cobbled together from Raiden’s expectations. Just then, Snake was confronted by Fortune, who reveals that she is Scott Dolph’s daughter, and she blames Snake for the death of her father. Snake and Fortune prepare to battle as Raiden headed up the ladder to the main room of Arsenal. Raiden then came out onto a giant platform. Solidus began to speak to him, telling him about the S3 program, The Solid Snake Simulation. The perfect program devised to create the perfect warrior. All the VR Training he went through was made to turn him into the next Solid Snake. Raiden then defeated a hoard of Metal Gear RAY’s, before eventually giving in, falling to his knees. Olga then jumped in front of him, saving him, before Solidus grabbed a hold of her, shooting her. Solidus then orders the RAYS to kill Raiden, when the virus starts taking affect. Raiden falls to his knees once again, passing out.

When he awakened the next day, April 30th, he found himself, Solidus Snake, Revolver Ocelot, Fortune and a handcuffed Solid Snake atop of Arsenal Gear. Solidus then revealed his true intentions. All along he was after a list of names of The Patriots! He was planning on giving Arsenal to Fortune, using her as a distraction to lure The Patriots fire, whilst he hunted them down and destroyed them one by one. Ocelot then revealed that the VR Training Raiden went through was NOT the S3 Program… But the Big Shell incident was! The similarities between the Shadow Moses Incident and the Big Shell crisis were more than just coincidence. Dead Cell in the place of FOXHOUND, the relation between Raiden and Solidus, compared to the one between Snake and Big Boss. The Harrier that Raiden destroyed in a similar fashion to the Hind-D. The computer virus that mimicked FOXDIE, the entire incident was simply a well-scripted exercise to turn Raiden into the perfect soldier. Ocelot then proceeded to kill Fortune and climb aboard Metal Gear RAY. Suddenly his arm twitched and he was once again possessed by Liquid Snake. Liquid said he knew exactly where the Patriots were and he intended to go and defeat them all, as he then boarded RAY and took off. Solid Snake then broke free of his handcuffs and dived into the ocean after Liquid.

Arsenal Gear then crashed through Manhattan, stopping at Federal Hall, Solidus then told Raiden that all he wants is to be remembered, as him and his brothers are unable to pass on their genes, the ability to reproduce was handily edited out of them at birth. And then, to provoke Raiden he tells him that it was he who killed his parents. Raiden, angered by this, gets a call from JFK, another AI inside of another Arsenal Gear. The AI explains to him about various aspects of human life, focusing mainly on Humanity’s constant struggle to keep its past alive. The AI then ordered Raiden to kill Solidus. Solidus and Raiden then fought to the death, with Raiden eventually emerging victorious.

As Raiden stood outside the front of Federal Hall, Solid Snake appeared and informed him that he and Otacon were going to find the Patriots. Raiden insisted on coming with them but Snake told him to stay as he still had things to do and people he needed to talk to. As Raiden waited more, he looked and saw Rose waiting for him. Skeptical, Raiden turns around to question Snake, but only finds a familier green parrot flying away in his place. Raiden asks Rose:"Who am I really?" to which she responds: "I wouldn't know...but we're going to find out together aren't we?" Suddenly, Raiden remembers what day it was, it was the day they first met! Raiden would then propose to Rose right there on the spot, vowing to teach their children all the good things in life together with her.

Otacon and Snake then discovered the list of the Patriots and discovered that all twelve of them were dead… and had been for the last hundred years… And one of them was Philanthropy's biggest contributor...
