METAL GEAR: UMGS

The Unofficial Metal Gear Saga Site

Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops was originally released for the Playstation Portable, this release marked the first time that a "true" Metal Gear game had been released for the system (the other releases included Metal Gear Ac!d, and Metal Gear Ac!d 2, which are not part of the true story-line). Portable Ops was later released for the same system under the name, "Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops +" (plus) which omitted the story element of the game, focusing more on multiplayer, and adding more characters.

EX-F.O.X. & SUPPORT TEAM

Naked Snake/ Big Boss

When direct American involvement in the Vietnam conflict started the year following Operation Snake Eater, Big Boss participated in Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol (LRRP) along with teams of Green Berets and Army Rangers. His skills in combat earned him the "great legendary soldier" moniker. Once the conflict had ended, Big Boss took part in more than 70 missions attached to groups such as the SOG (Studies and Observation Group), the Wild Geese (a mercenary unit), and the Delta Force (an elite counter-terrorist unit created in 1977). He also met up with a war orphan named Frank Jaeger at Mozambique in 1966, and escorted the child to an orphanage where he could be taken care of.

It was around this time that Big Boss was found to be infertile due to the Bikini Atoll testing he had taken part in years earlier.

San Hyeronimo Incident

In 1970, the FOX unit was considered rogue after it´s members organized a revolt and took over a base in South America known as "La Peninsula De Los Muertos". Big Boss was taken prisoner by Cunningham (a member of FOX).

Meeting a member of the Green Berets who was sent to take care of FOX going by the name of Roy Campbell, the two managed to persuade various members of the Red Army which FOX were commanding, to join forces with them and rise up against the renegade members, forming the early beginnings of what would become FOXHOUND. Para-Medic and Sigint also helped Boss in defeating FOX and clearing their names, aswell as Major Zero's (who were all partially blamed for the up-rising). Afterwards, Big Boss officially formed FOXHOUND, to carry on the tradition of the FOX unit and to give a home to the soldiers he had recruited during the San Hyeronimo Incident.

While there, Boss once again met Frank Jaeger, this time going under the code-name Null. The two fought on a number of separate occasions and after the incident Boss adopted Null and recruited him to FOXHOUND under a new code-name, "Gray Fox".

Major Zero

After  Operation Snake Eater, Zero left FOX. During the San Hieronymo Incident, Zero was accused of treason because his former unit, FOX, now under the command of Gene. In 1970 Major Zero officially disbanded FOX, prompting Big Boss to found FOXHOUND in 1971.

Para-Medic

When Big Boss was captured during the San Heironymo Incident he called Para-Medic to discover what had happened to FOX. She explained it the best she could and also advised him to phone Sigint as well. Big Boss phoned her again later in the incident because his new comrade, Roy Campbell had come down with a tropical version of malaria. Later still, Boss phoned her yet again, and she decided it would probably be easier for her to parachute in and help him permenantly. This could be considered as her temporarily joining Big Boss' FOXHOUND Unit.

Sigint

Sigint provides detailed information on weaponry, machinery, camouflage, and gadgetry. He, among others things, invented the binoculars Snake uses during Operation: Snake Eater. He provides useful strategies and tactics in boss battles and other situations. His codename refers to the military term "SIGINT", or SIGnal INTelligence. In 1965 Sigint joined ARPA and takes part in the development of ARPAnet.

Roy Campbell

Prior to joining FOXHOUND, he served the Marine Corps, the Green Berets and Delta Force. He was also involved in the downfall of the original FOX unit in 1970, although his exact involvement in this operation remain classified. All that is known that he originally met Big Boss in a South American base when they refuse to join FOX unit's revolt. The two escaped from their cells and formulated a plan to overthrow FOX, leading to the formation of FOXHOUND.

F.O.X.

Gene/ Viper

Originally known under the codename of Viper, Gene became the FOX unit's central member after Big Boss left. He led the FOX unit's revolt in the hope of turning the San Hieronymo base into "Army's Heaven", a new nation, run for and by soldiers. It was later revealed that he was the product of the “Successor Project”, the goal of which was to create the "ultimate battlefield commander" modelled after The Boss. Because of this, Gene thinks of himself and Big Boss as being "like brothers".

In his career it is revealed he had been into political science outside the military (explaining the reason behind the disposition of his speeches), as well as a rather prominent medical doctor. Gene's reflexes are faster even than Null's, and his voice was given a special manipulative mind-altering power. Gene feigns loyalty and strength to those who follow him but secretly despised the human race in general, and exhibited qualities of deeply pathological, tyrannical behaviour. During Gene's speech-making, he could swell up loyalty and powerful, trusting emotions in his soldiers, but also used it to instil fear in mobs and make riots break out, laughing cruelly as he did so. Gene also uses his gifted voice at one point to speak directly to Elisa's dark and powerful second personality, Ursula, and release her.

Big Boss confronted Gene near the end of the San Hyeronimo Incident and Gene taunted him with information regarding the nature of The Boss's defection, the deep rooted corruption within the White House and even hints at genetic engineering. Gene murdered one of his followers, exemplifying his hypocritical, two-faced nature and launched Metal Gear RAXA, resulting in a fight to the death with Big Boss. However Boss managed to triumph, allowing Gene the revelation that Boss was indeed the true successor after all, and relinquishes the funds for Army's Heaven. His last words are reminiscent of the last words of The Boss, and he pleads with Big Boss to go find his calling.

Python

Python is a twisted, depraved character who is obsessed with matching Big Boss and being his complete equal on the battlefield. He and Boss fought in Vietnam together, and he was considered by Boss to be the one person he could count on in battle. However sometime during a secret mission in Vietnam, Python received a severe injury which cost him the ability to regulate his body temperature, and as a result, Big Boss presumed him to be dead. Without intense medical care, Python would overheat to the point where he would eventually die. This eventually resulted in the need for surgery where he was fitted with a specially designed cooling suit filled with liquid nitrogen, complete with metal shunts installed in his skull to relieve himself of excess heat.

Because of this, he is able to freeze objects that are close to him by flushing the liquid nitrogen inside of his suit out into the environment, though by doing so he loses some of the cooling agent, making him heat up slightly. He is also a superb marksman, especially with assault rifles and due to the nature of his suit he is difficult to engage in hand-to-hand combat. Similar to other soldiers such as Null and Raiden he has a barcode imprinted on the back of his neck.

During the San Hyeronimo Incident, Python once again came face to face with Big Boss, but this time as his enemy. The two fought against each other, but Big Boss eventually gained the upper hand, and defeated him. Snake, with no intention of killing an old friend, instead requested that Python joined him in defeating the other members of FOX and helping to clear his name. Python accepted and helped him in his mission.

Cunningham/ Boa

Lt. Cunningham is an African American member of FOX and a former CIA lieutenant. He has an artificial leg which replaces the one he lost in battle, and is FOX's arms specialist. Was formerly known under the codename of Boa when he first enrolled in FOX. his unique sneaking suit color is yellow.

Cunningham is the one who brought Big Boss into San Hieronymo. While he feigns loyalty to Gene, it is revealed that he is actually working under direct orders from the Pentagon. His objective was to force Gene to deploy Metal Gear and launch a nuclear strike on the Soviet Union (and thus, tarnishing the CIA's reputation as an efficient organization). He attempted to gain Big Boss' cooperation, but Boss refused to take part in the Pentagon's plot and attacked Cunningham. Cunningham fought Boss in a flying hovercraft armed with a Gatling Gun, Side-Winder Missiles and a Laser. After Cunningham was defeated, he attempted to blow the San Hieronymo base with a Soviet-made Davy Crockett, but his hovercraft was badly damaged during the battle with Boss, causing it to explode, killing him.

Elisa & Ursula

Elisa and Ursula are twin teenage sisters with ESP abilities (including precognition) who were survivors of a nuclear explosion in the Ural Mountains. Ursula later joined FOX, and was the only member that didn't wear a sneaking suit), while Elisa was hired for her skills as a Doctor.

After their exposure to nuclear fall-out, they were taken by a lab in East Germany, in which they were subjected to power-amplifying experiments. The sisters were then adopted by Gene, with Ursula (the more powerful of the two) became a member of the FOX unit and a loyal follower of Gene, while Elisa became a researcher who watched over Null. During the San Herinymo Incident, Elisa helped out Big Boss, until it was revealed that Elisa and Ursula are not really sisters, but dual personalities of the same person.

As Ursula she later inhabited Metal Gear RAXA and fought Big Boss, using her powerful psychokinesis to allow the Metal Gear to move and act in a natural manner, as if it wasn't a machine at all. She survived the battle and turned against Gene when he threatened to launch a nuclear missile, but Gene overpowered her and stabbed her to death. While dying, she predicted that Big Boss will build his own Metal Gear. Her last words were spoken to Big Boss, "Snake... You will destroy Metal Gear... And you will create a new Metal Gear in its place...
Your children... Les Enfants Terribles... Snake... Your son will bring the
world to ruin... Your son... will save... the world."

Null/ The Perfect Soldier

Null was taken from an orphanage by the CIA and used as a test subject for the "Perfect Soldier Project". The project turned the boy into a more efficient killer, capable of killing his targets without remorse. When he was not fighting, he was kept in a coffin-shaped sensory deprivation water tank which would reset his memories. Because he was the only surviving test subject of the project, he was deemed a lost number and was given the codename of Null.

As a teenager, Null became a member of the FOX Unit when it was under the leadership of Gene. He confronted Big Boss twice during the operation. It was only after the second battle that Big Boss realized who Null really was. Big Boss defeated Null and convinced him to fight against the FOX Unit which had been using him.

ADDITIONAL CHARACTERS

Ocelot

In the 1970, during the San Hyeronimo incident, Ocelot has become dissatisfied with the Philosophers bickering, which has pitted the CIA against the Pentagon for control of the legacy. Ocelot eventually decides to assassinate the DCI and take control the Legacy himself. From this, he hopes to hand the country over to "The Patriots", which will be founded from the legacy. Ocelot breaks his ties to a Mr. X, codenamed "Null" (who shares Null's codename but is not the same man), until this mysterious man introduces Les Enfants Terribles to him. Ocelot agrees to allow this man in the Patriots, as long as Big Boss is allowed to join as well. It is this reason that Ocelot may be the founding father of the Patriots himself.

Ghost

Ghost is a mysterious radio contact who reveals the existence of Metal Gear to Snake. Later it is revealed that he is actually Sokolov, who survived the events of Snake Eater and was commissioned to develop Metal Gear.

Jonathan

A member of the Red Army, Jonathan is the first character who joins Snake's squad. He helps Snake during the mission after being convinced by Snake and Roy that Gene would threaten his fellow Russian countrymen. He is killed when he saves Snake by taking two bullets for him.

Colonel Skowronski

Skowronski is a loyal colonel of the Red Army and a former fighter pilot. He is the commander of the San Hieronmymo base. After Gene starts his rebellion, Skowronski's men turn on him. After Skowronski tries to kill Python but fails due to Python's armor, Python locks him up in the cell. Snake finds him and frees him after his drunken rant. Later on, he tries to kill Gene by shooting at him with a minigun while he is operating Metal Gear. Elisa (while she is "Ursula") then throws Skowronski from the cockpit to his death by using her telekinetic powers.

METAL GEAR RAXA

STORY

Set in 1970, six years after the events of Operation: Snake Eater, members of the FOX unit have started a revolt and taken over a base in South America known as La Peninsula de los Muertos where a new type of weapon based on the Shagohod is being developed. Naked Snake (still going under the code-name Snake, not feeling worthy of inheriting The Boss' code-name) has been charged with leading the revolt, despite the fact he had defected from the unit several years before hand.

Snake, together with the sole survivor of the Green Beret, Roy Campbell, set out to take on the FOX unit and destroy the ultimate weapon, Metal Gear.
