Metal Gear 2 was originally released on the MSX2 in Japan, and never came to the US until it's inclusion in Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, fully translated and updated.
In 1999, The world was facing an unprecedented energy crisis as oil reserves dried up. Meanwhile, the military nation of Zanzibar had become the world's sole nuclear power which threatened to upset the balance of power in the world. To respond to the energy crisis, a Czech biologist, Dr. Kio Marv, invented OILIX, an oil refining microbe. Before being able to put OILIX to use, Marv was kidnapped by Zanzibar, leaving Zanzibar in control of the world's answer to the energy crisis and nuclear arsenal.
The United States government would not let this continue and ordered FOXHOUND to infiltrate Zanzibar and rescue Marv. Roy Campbell, commander of FOXHOUND, called Solid Snake out of retirement, who accepted the assignment entitled Operation Intrude F014.
Snake succeeded in infiltrating Zanzibar. Along the way he teamed up with CIA agent Holly White and Gustava Heffner, Marv's bodyguard. He was also reunited with Dr. Pettrovich Madnar, the engineer responsible for the first Metal Gear, who revealed to Snake that Big Boss was alive and behind Zanzibar and that he had been captured to construct a new Metal Gear, Metal Gear D, for Zanzibar.
Snake once again ran into Gray Fox, but under very different circumstances: Gray Fox was working for Zanzibar and piloting the new Metal Gear. Fox killed Gustava as he blew up a suspension bridge, but Snake managed to elude Metal Gear and hook up with Madnar, who had been recaptured by Zanzibar's soldiers. However, Holly White informed Snake that Madnar had voluntarily joined Zanzibar and was willingly working for Big Boss. Upon learning this, Madnar tried to kill Snake, but was foiled and killed. Unfortunately for Snake, he arrived too late to save Marv. Nevertheless, Snake managed to recover the OILIX formula and destroy Metal Gear, but before he could escape he was confronted by Gray Fox.
Despite considering themselves friends, Snake and Gray Fox fought to the death amidst a mine field, hand-to-hand. Snake would later recount that it was a battle of two professionals doing their jobs, regardless of their friendship or personal feelings. The fight would end with Snake emerging victorious; Gray Fox lay dead on the field of battle. His victory would be short-lived, however. Ushered forth by Big Boss's taunts, Snake was once again put face-to-face against the legendary mercenary. Weaponless, Snake was forced to elude the armed and dangerous Big Boss and create an improvised weapon; using a cigarette lighter and a can of hairspray, Snake fashioned a makeshift flamethrower and used it to put an end to Big Boss, but not before Big Boss revealed to Snake that he was his father. Shaken but undeterred, Snake committed the act of patricide and escaped Zanzibar Land with Holly White and the OILIX formula. He returned OILIX to Campbell, was commended for his actions, and once again retired, this time to the Alaskan wilderness. He hoped to forget his war-torn past, recover from his PTSD, and cope with the revelation that he had killed his father.
After Big Boss turned renegade, Campbell was appointed as commander of FOXHOUND and began revising FOXHOUND's methods with his personal touch. He discarded the codename system and adopted the use of high-tech equipment such as radars and spy satellites.
He was the one who brought out former FOXHOUND agent Solid Snake during the Zanzibar Land uprising and served as his commanding officer during Operation: Intrude F014 in 1999. With his supervision, Snake was able to defeat the forces of Zanzibar Land and retrieve the OILIX formula.
In the following year, Campbell retired as FOXHOUND commander for undisclosed reasons, although it is believed he was unhappy with the direction the unit was taking.
McDonell Benedict Miller, otherwise known as Master Miller, was FOXHOUND's survival trainer during Roy Campbell's command of the unit.
Master Miller was born in the United States sixty years after his grandparents immigrated there from Japan (he is half-Japanese). He served as a survival master in SAS (Special Air Service, a special operations group, of Britain), The Green Beret Squad, US Marine boot camp, and most recently FOXHOUND. He also volunteered as a coach in MERC SCHOOL (Mercenary School) twice a year but since retired. When he served as a drill sergeant in FOXHOUND, he was referred to as a "Hell Master" and draftees called him "Master Miller" with the utmost respect.
Solid Snake probably met him while in FOXHOUND's boot camp. He divorced his first wife, Nadine, and resided in Los Angeles with his daughter, Catherine, while serving as an adviser for FOXHOUND during Roy Campbell's days in the unit. After the Uprising of Zanzibar Land and Colonel Campbell's retirement, Miller retired as well and moved to Alaska. He sometimes trained the Alaskan scouts during his free time.
George Kasler is a member of FOXHOUND during the events of Operation Intrude: F014. He is a well-known mercenary who possess intel on every active mercenary in the world and it is said that those who are not aware of who he is are not worthy of being recognized as part of the elite.
He participated in various regional conflicts for the South African Mercenary Force and the French Foreign Legion. He lended his services to Zanzibar Land during the War of Mercenaries against the CIS Army, but suffered a deep wound on his right thigh, ending his career. Afterwards, he worked briefly as a hostage negotiator and lent his field experience to work as a military informant.
He was hired to work as an arms advisor for FOXHOUND shortly before the events of the Zanzibar Land incident. During the mission, he provided operative Solid Snake with his expertise when he enganged in combat with Zanzibar Land's mercenary force. He informed Snake of whom Gray Fox really was near the end of Snake's mission.
Big Boss managed to escape Outer Heaven. In 1999, he took control of another nation known as Zanzibar Land. Recruiting war orphans from across the Third World and raising them as soldiers, Big Boss hoped to create a nation by and for soldiers, where soldiers were honored and not treated as tools. Big Boss also recruited Gray Fox to his cause. To ensure Zanzibar Land's success, Big Boss once again commissioned the creation of a more advanced Metal Gear prototype, known as Metal Gear D. This time, Dr. Petrovich Madnar (the scientist who was forced to developed the original TX-55 model in Outer Heaven) developed the new model on his own free will, after being institutionalized into an asylum in the US.
Solid Snake once again managed to infiltrate the enemy nation and destroy Metal Gear. Snake eventually defeated Fox in unarmed combat and, bruised and unarmed, was once again confronted by a machine gun-wielding Big Boss. Having spent his entire life on the battlefield, Big Boss could not conceive of a world without war, and attacked Snake in one final battle.
In 1999, Fox began hijacking several nuclear disposal sites with the revised Metal Gear D. This act, along with Zanzibar Land's kidnapping of Dr. Kio Marv, led to a retaliation from FOXHOUND, which was now under the command of Col. Roy Campbell. Once again, Snake was the agent sent out to neutralize Zanzibar Land. During the course of Snake's mission (Operation Intrude F014), Fox began transmitting anonymous messages to Snake in order to help him overcome certain obstacles and traps. Fox and Snake met again after four years when the bridge leading to the detention camp where Dr. Marv was being held was destroyed by Fox himself. Ironically enough, Fox also caused the death of his former lover, Gustava (who was in Zanzibar Land, now serving as an STB agent and Marv's bodyguard), when he destroyed the bridge. Later, Snake successfully destroyed Metal Gear D and confronted Fox barehanded in a minefield. Snake won the battle and escaped the facility, leaving a presumed dead Gray Fox behind.
Running Man is a Zanzibar Land mercenary noted for his high agility. He is well-versed in explosives and setting boobytraps. He was once a well-known short-range runner who gained his fame during the Barcelona Olympics. His athletic career was put to an end when he was convicted of doping and he became a mercenary afterwards. He was involved in terrorist activities through all of Europe. He once served as a sub-leader to a French terrorist group known as Les Enfants Terribles (no relation to the secret government project) and got his name from SEK (the German Special Police Force).
Running Man fought against Solid Snake in a gas-filled corridor during Operation Intrude F014. Snake managed to use Running Man's greatest asset against him by placing mines in Running Man's path.
Also known as the Phantom Assassin, Night Fright is the last surviving member of Whispers, a legendary guerilla unit from North Vietnam. In jungle warfare, he is said to put even the Green Berets to shame. In addition, Night Fright is equipped with the latest in camouflage technology, rendering him practically invisible to both radar and the naked eye. Night Fright's weapon is known as a Wei Shen Sho Ciang - a gun that is capable of making no noise when firing, making it even more difficult to track him down. No-one has ever seen his face.
An expert in jungle guerilla combat and ambush techniques, Jungle Evil is a former hunter from Rex Command. In addition, Jungle Evil was once a member of the South African Special Forces Brigade (also known as "Recces"). When in the jungle, he is considered to be more beast than man. According to Kasler, Jungle Evil wiped out two entire companies on his own in Vietnam and Yemen respectively.
Black Ninja is an amateur combatant, a former member of NASA's Extraterrestrial Environment Team. Until two years ago, nobody had even heard of the man. In battle, he specializes in lightning-fast attacks and quick reflexes. Though he isn't a seasoned professional, his skills make him a formidable opponent. Upon his defeat, Black Ninja is revealed to be Kyle Schneider from the Resistance at Outer Heaven. After the success of Snake's mission, NATO launched a massive bombing campaign against Outer Heaven. The Resistance fighters, along with the war orphans of Outer Heaven, were killed in the attack. Kyle himself was taken in and experimented upon,(during the Black Ninja project which was the predecessor to the Cyborg Ninja project) ultimately transforming him into Black Ninja. With the disbandment of his unit, Black Ninja retreated to Zanzibar Land and fought in the War of Mercenaries during Zanzibar Land's battle for independence in 1997. Two years later, during Operation Intrude F014, Black Ninja confronted Solid Snake - disguising himself as Dr. Marv in order to fool him. After his defeat at the hands of Snake and before his death, Black Ninja revealed himself as Kyle Schneider.
An elite assassin, and the only man who achieved special operations degree in Rumumba University of USSR. He had a career in Spetsnaz (special commandos in Russian army), he favors detonation operations using explosives, and is also a master at throwing grenades. Solid Snake ultimately defeated him with grenades of his own.
The Four Horsemen is an assasination squad employed by Zanzibar Land that specializes in close-quarters combat. They are comprised of former elite members of UDT, GSG-9 and SAS.
They fought against Solid Snake during Operation Intrude F014 in an elevator inside Tower Building under direct orders from Gray Fox and Big Boss.
Dr. Drago Pettrovich Madnar was a robotics engineer responsible for the creation of the Metal Gear TX-55 prototype. He was captured on his way to the United States and was forced to make war machines for Outer Heaven while his daughter was held hostage. Madnar informed Solid Snake of Metal Gear's weakness after he rescued his daughter,Elen.
Four years later, Madnar met with Snake in Zanzibar Land, and appeared to have been taken prisoner along with Dr. Kio Marv. In truth, he was in Zanzibar Land voluntarily, overseeing the development of the new Metal Gear D, partly out of revenge for being rejected by the American scientific community and his subsequent institution into an asylum.
Snake, believing Madnar to be a prisoner in Zanzibar Land, rescued the engineer, who informed him that Big Boss was in command of operations in the area. He orchestrated Dr. Marv's kidnapping, and eventual death. Snake learned the truth from agent Holly White, and confronted him. The doctor attacked Snake, but was easily defeated and killed.
Kio Marv is a czech scientist. In 1999 during the energy crisis, he invented of the OILIX formula, a new species of algae, that could produce petroleum-grade hydrocarbons with little expense and effort. He presented the algae to the World Energy Conference in Prague, and was on his way to a U.S demonstration when he was taken hostage en route by agents of Zanzibar Land.
FOXHOUND carried out a rescue operation immediately, and Solid Snake was called in to rescue Dr. Marv from Zanzibar Land's clutches.
During his captivity, Dr. Marv was able to send out a carrier pigeon with his contact frequency written on it. This pigeon was found by, Solid Snake, who was able to contact Dr. Marv. Unfortunently, Snake didn't speak Czech so he couldn't understand what the scientist was saying. Fortunately Snake was able to make contact with Marv's body guard, Gustava Heffner. Snake eventually reached the prison where Dr. Marv was being held, only to find that he'd been killed by his old friend, Dr. Madnar. However, he'd been able to hide the OILIX from his captors in an MSX game cartridge, allowing Snake to procure the data and deliver it to his superiors.
Dr. Marv's invention ended the world's energy crisis, but it ultimately cost him his life.
Holly White is an American freelance journalist. The daughter of a French mother and a British father, and undercover spy for the CIA. She has been awarded with a Pulitzer Prize for her report on Afghanistan and a Grammy for her documentary on KTV, "Unknown Bloodstream". Her fame has gained her various positions, including working as an exclusive model for Depeche Vogue magazine at one point. However, she also uses her positions to do undercover work for the CIA.
During Operation Intrude F014, she infiltrated Zanzibar Land for the CIA while posing as a journalist. She met up with Solid Snake, who was dispatched to the country to retrieve Dr. Kio Marv. Holly provided her assistance to Snake and served as a navigator of the fortress' layout. At one point, her cover was blown and she was captured. Snake managed to save her and she managed to stay hidden disguised as a soldier. It was she who exposed Dr. Madnar's treachery to Snake. After Snake retrieved the OILIX formula and defeated Big Boss, the two escaped from Zanzibar Land together. Snake had made dinner plans with Holly at the end of the mission, but these were never met due to Snake's retreat to the Alaskan wilderness.
Former professional figure skater, she was called "a fairy on ice" in world championships and the Olympics, and won 2 championships in a row. She came to know a western man name Frank in Calgary, and she fell in love with him. Afterward, she tried to seek asylum with him, but failed, and Gustava was stripped of her competition rights. Then she joined STB (Czechoslovakia International Secret Police). On a mission to escort Dr. Kio Marv to America, the plane was hijacked by Zanzibar Mercenaries. Her current situation is unknown.
Johan Jacobson is an expert on all animal matters, a zoologist, also known as a UN endangered species preservation authority. He has been acquainted with Pettrovich since they were college graduates. He was once a Green Peace member when he was young. Jacobson is currently the vice president of WWARF (World Wide Animal Rights Federation) and also a living matter accountant for the science magazine "Maxwell". He is now near Zanzibar to investigate animals indigenous to the area.

This Metal Gear is piloted by Gray Fox.
It is 8.5 m in overall height, counting the sensors and a nuclear module and its overall lenght is 7.9 m. When it is standard equipped it weighs in at 61.05 tons.
By 1999, the Cold War had thawed, nations were getting rid of nukes. Despite this, all was not well in the world. A series of shocks to the oil market spurred the development of new high-tech energy sources, including fusion power. However, most vehicles still relied on oil for power. Oil reserves were at a critical low, and the world community was prepared to take drastic measures, either by drilling into sand and shale for more oil, despite the difficulty -- or moving on to renewable fuels.
Such steps proved unnecessary when Czech scientist, Dr. Kio Marv, successfully bio-engineered a new species of algae, OILIX, that could produce petroleum-grade hydrocarbons with little expense and effort. Marv presented the algae to the World Energy Conference in Prague, and was on his way to a demonstration in the United States when he was kidnapped by soldiers from Zanzibar Land. NATO discovers that Zanzibar Land's leaders plan to hold the world hostage by controlling the supply of oil, and some good old-fashioned nuclear brinksmanship, courtesy of a stockpile of nukes.
Solid Snake was brought out of retirement by FOXHOUND's new commander, Roy Campbell, and is sent to Zanzibar Land to rescue Dr. Marv. Throughout the course of his mission, Snake teamed up with Holly White, a CIA operative posing as a journalist, and Gustava Heffner, a former StB agent and Dr. Marv's bodyguard. He is also reunited with Dr. Pettrovich Madnar, the Metal Gear inventor from Outer Heaven, who claims being captured once again to build another Metal Gear tank (called Metal Gear D) for Zanzibar Land. Snake learns from Dr. Madnar, that Big Boss, Snake's former commander, was alive and well, leading Zanzibar Land's forces.
However, upon reaching the suspension bridge leading to the Detention Camp, Gustava is killed by a missile fired by Metal Gear and Dr. Madnar is recaptured by the enemy. The new Metal Gear's pilot is revealed to be none other than Snake's former mercenary buddy, and best friend, Gray Fox. Determined to accomplish his mission, Snake fights against Zanzibar Land's elite mercenary force (which includes former Outer Heaven resistance leader Kyle Schneider, now called Black Ninja) and manages to reach Dr. Marv's cell.
Unfortunately, Snake arrives too late, as he finds Dr. Marv's corpse, who was unable to survive the repeated torture sessions, along with Dr. Madnar, who was unable to save him. Just before Snake could retrieve the OILIX formula left by Dr. Marv, Holly reveals via radio message that Dr. Madnar was not captured after all, but was in Zanzibar Land voluntarily overseeing the development of Metal Gear D. After the truth comes out, Madnar attacks Snake, but is not successful in killing him.
With the OILIX formula in Snake's hands, Snake was confronted by Gray Fox piloting Metal Gear D once again. After successfully destroying Metal Gear, Snake found himself in a minefield. The two engaged in hand-to-hand combat against each other and Snake eventually emerged as the victor.
After defeating Fox, Snake was forced to do battle with Big Boss. With no weapons at his disposal, Snake was forced to improvise and make a homemade flamethrower consisting of a cigarette lighter and a can of hairspray. Taking Big Boss by surprise, Snake defeated him for the second and last time. Snake and Holly escaped and together, they delivered the OILIX formula to Campbell.
After the situation was defused, Snake disappeared into the Alaskan wilderness, not to be heard from for a long time...
