FOXHOUND

Big Boss

Big Boss(Kack Saladin

In 1971, Big Boss set up FOXHOUND - a new unit based on the old F.O.X. unit, which had disbanded a year earlier. While establishing FOXHOUND, Big Boss was secretly creating Outer Heaven, a military nation where soldiers such as him would be honored for the warriors they were. Using the plans he discovered from Granin during the Snake Eater mission, Big Boss used another scientist, Dr. Pettrovich Madnar to create a working Metal Gear model. It was Big Boss' dream to forge a world of endless battle, a world of war and conflict - a true soldier's paradise. Outer Heaven would also serve as a mercenary dispatching company, where Big Boss' mercenaries would spread the seeds of war throughout the world.

Big Boss created an alter-ego to hide the fact that he himself constructed Outer Heaven. Here is the story of Colonel Vermon CaTaffy.

A once tranquil shepard boy, who grew up on the remote banks of the Sam Sam River in outer Mongolia with his 27 sisters, turned to terrorism at an early age. Now after years of pillaging innocent people, he has taken control of Outer Heaven. Here he is sole tyrant and radical dictator. He has created the ultimate super weapon- Metal Gear.

Solid Snake

Snake's first mission for FOXHOUND came in 1995. He was tasked with infiltrating Outer Heaven, a military nation led by a feared and legendary mercenary, deep within South Africa. Snake was tasked with rescuing Gray Fox, a FOXHOUND agent who was captured earlier, and shed light on Metal Gear, which Gray Fox mentioned in a broken radio message sometime before his capture.

Codenamed Operation Intrude N313, Snake approached Outer Heaven via river passage and infiltrated the fortress. He kept in contact with Big Boss, the unit's commander who personally oversaw the operation. After skillfully passing guards and security measures, Snake found and released Gray Fox, who informed Snake on the truth behind Metal Gear, a bi-pedal, nuclear-equipped battle tank that could tip the balance of power in favor of Outer Heaven. Snake, still relatively green at the time, was impressed by the cool and precise demeanor and attitude of Gray Fox, a soldier within FOXHOUND who had achieved its highest ranking, "Fox". Snake then proceeded onward through the fortress, rescuing more prisoners and assisting the local resistance cell fighters in their battle against Outer Heaven.

After dealing with several of Outer Heaven's skilled mercenaries, Snake neared where Metal Gear was being stored; however, the further he progressed, the more difficult and confusing the situation became. Big Boss fed Snake poor or down-right wrong information via radio, leading him into traps and dangerous situations. Undeterred, Snake managed to destroy Metal Gear - only to discover the truth behind Outer Heaven's leader shortly thereafter. Big Boss, his commander and "father", was behind it all. He had established Outer Heaven as a means to give warriors such as himself a home, a place they would always be welcomed. He envisioned a world where warriors were always desired, where they were not shunned or used at the whim of politicians. He had sent his son, Snake, to Outer Heaven because he did not think Snake would succeed. Big Boss had underestimated the "inferior" clone of the Les Enfants Terribles project.

Nevertheless, Big Boss would not allow Snake to escape without a fight. On the lowest level of Outer Heaven, father and son engaged in combat. After a fierce duel, Snake managed to defeat Big Boss. As the fortress began to crumble and fall apart, Snake left Big Boss for dead and made his escape from Outer Heaven. Operation Intrude N313 was a success.

Disillusioned, Snake quit FOXHOUND. He was later scouted by the CIA and spent six months as a deep cover agent before he became dissatisfied with the system and left. He became a mercenary for hire and when he earned enough money he retired into the Canadian wilderness.

Gray Fox

He is considered  a sort of leader in FOXHOUND due to his durable physique and superb intelligence. Gray Fox had distinguished himself on the battlefield as an extremely competent soldier. He became a member of Big Boss' FOXHOUND special ops unit shortly afterwards. His skill was reflected by his prestigious codename- he would be one of the only soldiers to ever bear the name of "Fox"( the other being Roy Campbell, who was a support agent, and not an active field agent). From this point on, Frank Jaeger would become known as "Gray Fox". In 1995, Gray Fox was dispatched to the fortified South African state of Outer Heaven as part of Operation: Intrude N312 in order to gather information on a supposed prototype weapon in development. Fox's skills were no match for the enemy forces, however, as he was captured some days later, his last transmission being "Metal Gear. Fox escaped imprisonment thanks to Solid Snake, a rookie to FOXHOUND in 1995. Solid Snake would go on to confront Big Boss, who would reveal himself as the leader of Outer Heaven. Defeated by Snake, Big Boss would survive the intense battle, left for dead by his underestimated opponent. Gray Fox decided to join his commander and go underground, only to emerge in 1999...

FOXHOUND MEMBERS NOT FEATURED

Roy Campbell/ Chicken Fox

After holding high rank in the United States Marine Corps (USMC), Fifth Marine Legion, and the Green Beret Squad, he joined FOXHOUND, and became vice-commander. Was known for the code name "Chicken Fox" in his early days.  In 1995, Campbell provided assistance to Solid Snake during the Outer Heaven uprising. Then in 1999, Campbell was made the new commander of FOXHOUND after Big Boss' betrayal. Campbell did away with the aging codename system, instead employing the use of high-tech equipment, like spy satellites and radar. It was Campbell who urged Snake out of retirement, not once but twice - the first time was during the armed riots which were taking place at the ultra-nationalist sovereignty of Zanzibar Land.

McDonnel "Master" Miller

Hired by Campbell as survival consultant for FOXHOUND. Born in the United States 60 years after his grandparents immigrated there, he has served as a survival master in SAS (Special Air Skytroopers of Britain), The Green Beret Squad, US Marine boot camp, and most recently FOXHOUND. He is also volunteers as a coach in MERC SCHOOL (Mercenary School) twice a year. When he served as a drill sergeant in the FOX HOUND, he was referred to as a 'Hell Master' and draftees called him "Master Miller" with respect. He divorced his first wife (Nadine), and is currently residing in Los Angelos with his daughter (Catherine). Miller is full of ideas and is quite knowledgeable in the area of science.

OUTER HEAVEN    Mercenary Dispatch Company

Prior to its downfall in 1995, Outer Heaven boasted an elite group of mercenaries from around the world that guarded the fortress in addition to a conventional armed force. Yet in spite of this, none of them were able to survive in battle against Solid Snake, who was still a rookie during Operation Intrude N313.

THE OUTER HEAVEN MERCENARIES

Fire Trooper

Former member of Grenzschutzgruppe 9 (GSG 9), a counter-terrorism unit of the German Federal Police. He later became a mercenary for Outer Heaven, where he confronted Solid Snake in the underground prison. Fire Trooper was ultimately defeated and killed by Snake.

Machine Gun Kid

Another mercenary of Outer Heaven. His specialty lies in the use of high powered machineguns, such as the one he used against Solid Snake during Operation Intrude N313. Before joining the other mercenaries at Outer Heaven, Machinegun Kid was a member of the British Special Air Service. His defeat came at the hands of Solid Snake, in the corridors of Building No.1.

Dirty Duck

Originally the leader of the terrorist group, "Egg Plant", Dirty Duck then joined up with Outer Heaven where he continued to use his cowardly tactic of using hostages as shields. His weapon of choice is a type of boomerang. During Operation Intrude N313, Dirty Duck kidnapped Jennifer's brother, holding him hostage along with two others. Thanks to Snake, the hostages were rescued unharmed and Dirty Duck was defeated.

Shot Maker

One of the many mercenaries situated at Outer Heaven. Shotmaker is a former member of Spetsnaz and a specialist of the riot gun. Prior to the collapse of the Soviet Union, Shotmaker served in the Russian special forces. At Outer Heaven, Shotmaker was assigned as the warden of the underground prison facility, also guarding Gray Fox - who had been captured during an earlier mission. Shotmaker confronted and attacked Snake, though his skills were no match for the young operative.

Bloody Brad

Bloody Brad was the codename given to the TX-11 series of mechanized soldiers built to guard vital equipment, hostages, and areas housing the Outer Heaven mercenaries, and important files. developed  using Dr. Pettrovich's robot technology, they are virtually indestructible.

OUTER HEAVEN RESISTANCE

Diane

Diane is a member of the Resistance movement at Outer Heaven. She was formerly a vocalist of "Thin Wall", a positive punk band and uses her feminity for intelligence activities. Having gone on several intelligence missions in Outer Heaven, she has accumulated knowledge about the mercenaries and armaments of Outer Heaven. During Operation Intrude N313, she provided her expertise to Snake, providing the weaknesses of each of Outer Heaven's mercenaries. She apparently had romantic feelings for Snake, but never expressed her feelings to him. She lived with her boyfriend Steve, who would often answer Snake's calls only to be annoyed with him and provide excuses for Diane's absence.

Kyle Schneider

Kyle Schneider is the leader of the resistance movement at Galzburgh, South Africa. He was once an architect who was forced to be part of Outer Heaven's design staff, but joined the underground movement when his wife and child were killed (the exact circumstances of their deaths were never revealed).

During Operation Intrude N313, he lent his the knowledge of the fortress layout to Solid Snake, serving as a sort of navigator during the mission. However, Snake loses contact with Schneider just before he was about to reveal the identity of the Outer Heaven leader and he is presumed dead afterwards.

Jennifer

A former resistance member. To save her brother, who was captured in Outer Heaven, she crept into Outer Heaven as one of it's medical staff. She supports you physically.

STORY

200km north of the country of Galzburg, South Africa, lay the fortress of Outer Heaven, a fortified state that had been founded by a legendary mercenary in the late 1980s. In 1995, the western world had received intelligence that warned of a weapon of mass destruction that was suppousedly being constructed deep within the fortress of Outer Heaven. The government called in the high-tech Special Forces unit FOXHOUND, commanded by the legendary soldier Big Boss, to infiltrate the fortress, and ordered them to send in an agent to assess the situation and neutralize whatever threat the weapon posed to the western world. In a mission known as "Operation: Intrude N312," FOXHOUND operative Gray Fox infiltrated the Outer Heaven stronghold. However, days later, contact with Gray Fox was lost, his final transmission consisting of only two words: "METAL GEAR..."

Rookie FOXHOUND operative Solid Snake, was ordered by Big Boss to perform a follow up mission (known as Operation Intrude N313) and to rescue Gray Fox.

Snake infiltrated Outer Heaven through it's sewer system, and made contact with local resistance members Kyle Schneider, Diane, and Jennifer. Using all of his skills and the equipment he procured on site, he manages to rescue Fox. Fox tells Snake that before he was captured, he was able to learn about Outer Heaven's secret weapon, a nuclear warhead-equipped bipedal walking tank codenamed Metal Gear, which could engage and dominate in any form of combat as well as launch its nuclear warheads from any location, making a nuclear strike possible from anywhere on the globe. Outer Heaven planned to use Metal Gear to impose itself as the new world superpower, and to oppose the western government.

In order to learn Metal Gear's weaknesses, Snake rescued the lead engineer of the project, Dr. Drago Petrovich Madnar, and his daughter, Elen. Dr. Pettrovich told Snake to destroy Metal Gear by placing C4 on it's legs where the armor was thinnest. Armed with this information , Snake began to fight his way through the fortress, hoping to reach it's lowest level and destroy the weapon. However, the further Snake progressed the more he noticed that whatever traps were being set for him were becoming more and more precise, prompting Snake to wonder how his actions were being so easily tracked. Unfortunently, Schneider was wounded by hostile soldiers and lost contact with Snake after he called Snake to tell him that he'd figured out the identity of the commander of Outer Heaven.

Snake eventually reached the 100th floor basement, where he came face to face with the partially completed Metal Gear. Dodging the weapon's defense lasers, Snake uses the weakness Dr. Pettrovich told him about to destroy Metal Gear. Metal Gear's destruction caused Outer Heaven's destruct sequence to become activated. Snake attempted to escape the fortress but before he could get away, the leader of the Outer Heaven mercenaries revealed himself: FOXHOUND's commander and the CO of Operation Intrude N313, Big Boss

Big Boss had been using his connections in the U.S. government to establish his own mercenary force, corrupt and steal military intelligence, and fund his various activities. He intended to have Outer Heaven become the world's most powerful nation, (and to oppose the western nations under the rule of the organization known as the Patriots, though he doesn't inform Snake of this intention.) He had sent the rookie Snake in, hoping that he would be captured and end up feeding the U.S. government misinformation, to buy more time for Metal Gear's construction, but he had underestimated Snake's capabilities. An underground battle ensues between Big Boss and Solid Snake. Despite injury and exhaustion, Snake is able to defeat his former commander, and he escapes the Outer Heaven fortress as it crumbles in flames behind him. Big Boss remains behind and is presumed to have been killed in the explosion.
